| 1/72 Ju-52-3 British Airways "G-AFAP" is a no good I was so looking after the model mentioned in the title, and then I see photos of it on the mule and it is such a let-down! Pax windows have been covered, unlike in previous military versions, where you could even have guns coming out of the "glass". I cannot believe Corgi decided to take such a shortcut and blank out all windows on this MASSIVE model in 1/72 scale! it's definitely NOT a small scale model where you can represent windows with grey paint, this is a 1/72 which price is close to the 1/48 (!!!) FM version!!! First it was the MiG-29 let-down and now the first civilian Ju-52... Attached is a profile of the real thing, found in RAF Museum in Cosford, picture stolen from "preservedaxisaircraft.com" and a side shotof the Corgi effort by Mr. Tricatus...WHY DID THEY BLANK THE WINDOWS!?!! | |||||||||||||

The model is NOT of the one in Cosford that one is a Spanish CASA painted to look like the BA one,the original had covered windows and was used to carry mail and freight it also had different engines and three bladed props ![]() ![]()

That top shot has to be one of the more interesting looking Ju 52 center engine configurations I have seen. Neat looking shot.

| Re: 1/72 Ju-52-3 British Airways "G-AFAP" is a no good Wow, I stand corrected then. I did realize from description in a.net that the so called "real aircraft" was not a Junkers but a CASA, and the engine difference was very noticeable, but the picture does show the plane preserved in Cosford, unless all these photographers are wrong!?!? I have personally never been there. Anyway, thanks for showing us pictures of the subject modeled, and evidence that the Corgi effort is indeed accurate, at least when it comes to blank windows. I do notice though that the Corgi model's positioning of the registration is similar to the preserved CASA, because in the old pictures of G-AFAP, the "G" is overimposed with the non-blanked window behind the pax door, while on the Corgi model it is way smaller, farther aft, and the small round window is blanked. | |||||||||||||

| Re: 1/72 Ju-52-3 British Airways "G-AFAP" is a no good
The aircraft Corgi is modeling would be a Ju 52 in that description indicates 1936 date for the aircraft. CASA 352 production did not start until after WWII to the best of my knowledge, so the aircraft Corgi is modeling would be a Ju 52. I did a bit of digging and it looks like the variant of the Ju 52 sold to Great Britain was the Ju52/3mnai. This variant was powered by a Pratt & Whitney Wasp as apposed to standard BMW engines. This could account for the different cowling shape and also the three bladed prop. Just based on the black and white photos, looks like Corgi did a pretty nice job on this one.

| Re: 1/72 Ju-52-3 British Airways "G-AFAP" is a no good It certainly i at Cosford but it is not the original G-AFAP,the Cosford example is a former Spanish Airforce airframe painted to look like the BA original to fit in the the former BA collection at Cosford. The original of this machine was captured by the Germans at Fornebu airport Oslo 9th april 1940 and probably pressed into service with the Luftwaffe. Here is the history of the Cosfod airframe http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/...L%20(Ju52).pdf Anothe pic showing markings closer to the Corgi example. ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: 1/72 Ju-52-3 British Airways "G-AFAP" is a no good Thanks SniperUK for the imput. I certainly learnt a lot about the model and the real airplane since I posted the first comment on the blanked windows. Still, I will wait until another Tante Ju with clear pax windows comes up to take action. The military versions were tempting but...must resist! | |||||||||||||

As a noob on this forum, I've already noticed a couple of instances where someone thought their model was not historically accurate, only to be corrected by some very knowledgeable person that the model is indeed correct. Isn't that a great feeling, after an apparent let-down? It's almost like you get to experience buying and receiving the model twice. ![]()
