Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I'm thinking about picking up the Flying Mule collection's Don Gentile P-47 and Spitfire. Does anyone else have these? Are they worth getting?

Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

It's as good a Corgi P-47 as any. I like mine. Mule has it on sale. Don't know anything about the Spit.

You can pick them up at a good price right now from one of the members in the classified section.

I think they are worth purchasing I own both. They are both limited to 750 which is a small run and are still available from some dealers. They have been a bit slow on selling though.

Keep'em flying.

Thumbs up Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I have them both and like them for the history of the pilot and rarity of the models (750 each). Aiken's has these listed at a good price and I believe a member had these in the classifieds a while back so if you pull the trigger you should be able to find them without too much bother

Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I like them, they are typical Corgi Spits and P-47, which is to say good, if not steller birds. (The usual Corgi strengths and faults.)

One of the big advatages is that they represent a famous pilot, which is always a plus in my book.

If you already have a bunch of Corgi's beware that both these birds are "off shoots" of regular edition birds with a minor difference in the livery. For some folks that might be appealing, since you will have two birds from the same/similair squadrons you can present. For others, that might be a draw back since you are getting some so close.

Overall, Martin did a great job chosing these for production.

Anything for a weird life.

I have some Corgi's (all 9 are Luftwaffe birds) and I haven't bought or acquired anything but Luftwaffe planes. I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on these two, not sure if I should branch out yet, or wait til I acquire the other models I have my eye on. I was hoping my first non-German plane would be a reasonably price Corgi Old Crow (1/32 or 1/72), but I haven't been able to find any that are reasonably priced. I'm interested in these two because Gentile flew with the Eagle squadron, and having read the book "The Few" by Alex Kershaw, I wouldn't mind picking up some birds those guys flew (kinda wished the spit was in RAF markings and not in U.S. markings). I don't remember if Gentile was mentioned in the book though, it's been a year or two since I read it.

Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I have both which I think are excellent. I also have the Matchbox Gentile P51 and display all three models together. I know the Spitfire sold well, however the P47 was a bite of a slow seller. As a side note, it's not to often you find a Spitfire with nose art so if you get a chance to buy it-grab it. I don't believe you will regret your purchase and this is coming from a Luft. Collector My 109s, 190s, etc needed something to shoot at

Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I also like mine, and plan to get the new Corgi 51B version when Corgi's Jan-Feb-Mar or possibly Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr-May-Jun releases finally get here (having faith that the announced releases are not mythical--and that there is still a Corgi). I was surprised to find (thank you Excel) that I also have the Matchbox version of the D, which I bought way-back-when for US$14.99. The Corgi Gentile Spit has a unique color scheme, being USAAF grey underneath, British grey and green on top, with US yellow-ring/blue field/white star markings. In an age of gnome pilot figures, it also has a pretty good seat sitter.

Below is Corgi's Debden model, which is virtually identical to the Corgi Flying Mule version (no nose art).

Re: Don Gentile's P 47 and Spitfire

I have both P-47 and Spitfire and i think they are great to have in any collection.
After all it's Gentile...One of the best Mustang aces around too.
I did however chose not to get the P-51B at this time.
