With HM's pending release of their 1/32 scale SBD.....

I was wondering how many already own 1/32 scale aircraft? Just from my observations of this forum as well as it being sold out at lots of online retailers, the HM SBD is going to be a great seller. In contrast, the Corgi 1/32 scale Mosquito was a so-so seller, even at lower price (initially and occasionally on Ebay). I was just wondering why that was? I mean one would think the Mosquito would be more attractive to plane buffs. Is it because of any inaccuracies in the Corgi model, the hype of the SBD or something else?

Personally, I own most of Corgi's 1/32 planes and think they're all great but it seems that most forum members aren't really into Corgi's 32nd scale. Is it just my perception or is this a true statement? Are alot of people here into 1/32 scale or is the SBD the exception?

Don't crucify me, just curious as to everyone's opinion......hey, what the heck let's take a poll!

Re: With HM's pending release of their 1/32 scale SBD.....

I think the big reason Corgi's 1/32 Mosquito didn't sell so well is simply due to space issues. I purchased a Recon Mossie for an inexpensive price, but shipping was over 35 dollars, and when I received the box, I saw why. It was huge, about the size of a large suitcase, and when I opened it, it had a lot of loose bits, ie landing gear covers, etc. I personally like Corgi's 1/32 line, as well as GMP's 1/35s, owning at least 1 type of each. Now these boxes aren't all that small either, but they don't take up a huge amount of display space like the 1/32 mossie, or FM's 1/48 heavy bombers. It will be interesting to see what HM comes up with in 1/32, my personal preferences would be for a Corsair, Hellcat, and FW 190A.

I agree with sky -- I thought about a Mossie but when I saw the size of the sucker, and the packaging (which I keep), I just couldn't justify it. Now, if I were really into Mossies... I'd have probably found some space, but there are other aircraft I like better -- such as the SBD, which I've always been fascinated with.

I pick and choose larger scale models and really only go for those that I really like a lot, regardless of manufacturer -- I really should be this discriminating with 1:72 but they're sort of like popcorn...

If HM will do a 1/32nd F-4U Corsair or even an Fw 190, please sign me up!

Re: With HM's pending release of their 1/32 scale SBD.....

I agree with you guys that the Mossie is huge and the box is big too, but it is roughly the same size as the 1/48 FM B-17 & B-24. I think it also weighs less than those two planes.

I have the Mossie and can't say enough about it. The only complaint I have is that Corgi didn't hinge the landing gear doors which is kinda dumb considering they made the actual landing gear retractable/extendable.

Also, the Corgi Mustangs, Spit, BF-109 and Huricanes are really nice too but no one seems as enamoured with them as with the SBD. Now don't get me wrong, I love the SBD as much as the next guy and have preordered. Still, I can't help wondering what makes it so much more appealing than any other 32nd scale diecast (i.e. the 72nd scale isn't any more desirable than other 72nd scale planes)....maybe because it's "limited"?

Just curious.

I personally love the Corgi 1/32s (only have 3, they're all Bf-109s). I would like to get all of the 109s (especially the Graf, if it ever comes out), they just seem to look so much better than the other models I've seen. Would love to see a Fw-190, P-47, or P-38 made by Corgi in the scale.

Not sure it's any more appealing, It's a much smaller production run than Corgi's 1:32 range so you should keep that in mind when you consider it "selling out fast" -- most of Corgi's 1:32 have prod runs of 2-3K. Plus, corig has several different versions/repaints of each mold out. And the Mustang, Spit, and 109 has been done to near death in all scales by just about everybody so the SBD is relatively "untapped" in comparision. But, who knows, when we all finally see this HM beast we might not be so enamored with it -- I hope not!

1:72 is by far the dominant scale for collectors and with corgi cooling off prod of 1:32, if not stopping entirely, it will be really interesting to see how HM foray into this space goes. Smaller prod runs, even if it means higher MSRPs, is the right approach I think.

Though this didn't work for GMP (but 1:35 is an odd scale for the aircraft market)

Interesting questions, trex. I love the scale. I have 5 Corgis (two 1:35 GMPs), plan on getting the FOV P-39 and the HM Dauntless, and I look forward to more models in this scale. I do not have a Mossie... only because of space. I want a nicely detailed Mossie in 1:48, but I have no place to put the 1:32 model (and I don't own any 1:48 scale heavies). I think Corgi's 1:32 Mossies are very nice... so I have no problem at all with the models. Like Pappy, if I was WAAAAY into the Mossie, I would make an exception.

Re: With HM's pending release of their 1/32 scale SBD.....

These are what I have so far:
1/35th GMP: 4 Mustangs, 3 P-40Es
1/32nd Corgi: 2 Hurricanes (Sea and NF), 1 of each - Spitfire, Bf109, Mustang and PRU Mossie

I expect to see my paltry collection of large scale diecasts to grow and with the HM Dauntless coming,
I've no doubt I will be buying other types if they were produced, and will be getting rid of the smaller ones
in my collection.
