Question about Corgi "McKnight" Hurricane AA32008

A few days ago I received the Corgi Hawker Hurricane AA32008 - William McKnight RCAF, 242 Sqn, 1940. Had to get this beautiful plane since I didn't yet have a good BoB representitave for Hurricanes.

My question is about the interesting half black / half white paint scheme on the bottom of the plane. When I was checking into info. on this plane, I remember reading something about this paint scheme being used during or just after the Dunkirk evacuation. But now I can't find the reference.

So do any of you Anglophiles / BoB-philes know what was up with the odd paint scheme? What was the purpose for it or the reasoning behind it? This is the only plane I've seen with this scheme, so obviously it didn't last very long.

Thanks for any information, you knowledgable bunch o' lunatics!

Re: Question about Corgi "McKnight" Hurricane AA32008

Congrats SkyBuffalo - that's the finest diecast 1/72 Hurricane (in my opinion) .

I believe the underside black/white undersides (like the 'Kiwi' Spitfire) was an unsuccessful attempt at providing a 'recognition' scheme to avoid friendly AA fire - a forerunner to D-Day stripes one may say ...

Re: Question about Corgi "McKnight" Hurricane AA32008

It was a standard scheme on all Fighter Command aircraft in the first year of the war lasting on some aircraft into the Battle of Britain. In due course it was replaced by the "Sky" undersides sometimes referred to as Duck Egg Blue. As Cardinal says, the b/w scheme was supposed to aid the AA gunners but of course it also made them rather obvious to the Luftwaffe flying below them.

Love mine too, except that the paint keeps chipping off the black under-side!

Re: Question about Corgi "McKnight" Hurricane AA32008

Has anyone else noticed the camo pattern from the wing showing through the red area around the guns in the wing on "McKnight" Hurricane?

I still think this is a beautiful bird and well worth picking up for anyone who wants a B of B Hurricane I just wish the red paint was not so thin.

Have just checked mine,........ no such problem here. But have you noticed that the tailplane is all earth colour, no green camo?

Thank goodness it is just the black. At least you could touch that up easy enough. I'm considering getting one of these from Perry to tie up with my Bader 242 Sqdn Hurricane. Absolutely LOVE that fighter! (Of course, that Sea Hurricane also has my attention big-time too! Decisions, decisions)
