Must Have Lancaster Nose Art

"Johnny Walker" was painted on Lancaster W-4964, WS-J of No. 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The aircraft had a distinguished career, logging a total of 106 operations.
Likely the most detailed piece of work of the war, it features the Johnny Walker whiskey symbol with the firm's equally famous motto, "Still Going Strong." The artwork includes the ribbons from four DFM's and two DFCs that were awarded to her aircrew. The chevron indicates a year's service on active duty. Below are three wound stripes, one for a container of fifty, four pound incendiary bombs that were dropped from above and passed through the aircraft's wing.

Below these is the ribbon for the 1939-1945 star medal followed by a swastika indicating an enemy fighter shot down and a marking for a searchlight that was shot out at low level. The bomb tally indicates 104 regular night operations, one day operation, and a larger bomb indicating the 12,000 pound "Tall Boy" bomb dropped by J-Johnny that struck the Battleship Tirpitz on the aircraft's 100th operation. The red star recalls the aircraft's visit to Russia en-route to bombing the Tirpitz.
This replica of the nose art from "Johnny Walker" was painted by Clarence Simonsen on a wing panel from a Canadian-built Lancaster.

That would be a good one for Corgi to make...I think the WS-J lettering was red with a yellow outline..
The Johnny Walker nose art is cool looking.

I would love to see a Just Jane one as well.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Must Have Lancaster Nose Art

Probably never see it unless Corgi pays off Johnny Walker's lawyer first. But it would be nice.

Star, you're right on the yellow-outline on the Sdqn-codes, but that was only 1945 / Late-War, when 9 Sqdn were flying out of Bardney in Lincolnshire.

The actual B.B.M.F. Lancaster PA.474 used to wear the "Johnny Walker" nose art & markings for a few seasons...........

I.I.R.C. there were some disgruntled voices, as the actual brewery where the 'famed' "Scotch" drink is refined, refused to fund or sponsor any money towards '474's operating costs whilst wearing those markings (well, they WERE getting free advertising) !!!!!!!!!!!!
(Typical Scot's 'tightwads' !!!!!!!!)

Although it has to be said, PA.474 is actually on the M.o.D 'inventory', so is ACTUALLY funded by the British-Government.........

However, a few 'Squid' towards the R.A.F. Benevolent-fund wouldn't have gone amiss !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interestingly, there were a Wartime B.24 & B.17 with the actual nose-art "Southern-Comfort" named after the Golden-Liquid !!!!!!

Interesting also that M.D.'s pointed out the 'Just Jane' nose artwork, as is featured on the 'East-Kirkby' (Panton Bro's) privately-owned Lancaster.........

As far as I'm aware, the 'nose-art' is (like Duxford's B-17.G 'Sally-B') fictitious.

I'd love some of the other forum members post some Lanc' 'nose-art' that Corgi 'MIGHT' consider using, in future times ?

Re: Must Have Lancaster Nose Art

This is a fantastic nose art, even if i'm not that big with allied fighters/bombers.My interests goes more to german planes but i always wondered what b****nose art Corgi had choosen for there production (except of the BOL). There are so many great nose art who really deserves it to make. Maybe in the future the nose art collection will come back to us.
