| Re: "Friday the 13th" -- Then what?
Funny enough, Canuck beat me to it, suggesting the Australian Squadrons !!!!! However, "Da-Na" (music & drum rolls)....... I've found one of my old 1/72nd scale decal-sheets with 466 & smartd's mention....."Vicky" (one of the most famous). I'm hearing ya J.P.N, regarding your above-quote on most Canadian-birds (I Love 'em) but I wouldn't agree that the 'Mynarski'-Lanc' was a swift seller !!!!!!!! Main reason being, that awkward mid-upper turret that was realistic (on 'VR*A')....... ....... but 'naff' looking compared to the more standard Fraser-Nash FN.50's I'm certain that affected sales - I & know THAT'S THE ONLY REASON that I didn't buy it, honest. (It was cheap........ £ 40 / $ 80 US). I've known about the Mynarski/Brophy story since I was a 14 year-old & bought 'Speed & Power' magazine, where the fantastic-story was related in great-detail, along with various imagery....... that made me want it..... till I saw 'Brophy's' ugly-slimline-turret, without the fairing that just looks SO GOOD wrapped around a standard-looking FN-50. I'll agree about the R.C.A.F Wellington though !!!!!!!!!!!!! Without doubt THE best one made.......I bought TWO as I love it that much !!!!!!!!!!!!! Back on the Halifax-choices, have to agree that a Coastal-Command 'bird' is a neccessity, & there are others (not yet mentioned) that I'll suggest in subsequent-posts ! meantime check out the 1970's decal-sheet that I'll post next !!!!!!!!! Contains 2 x 466 Sqdn Halifaxes & "Vicky" (the Vicious-Virgin), as well as Friday the 13th, LV.907 which is why I bought the sheet (when I was considerably younger than I am now !!!!!!!! LOL.

Yeah -- that was a classic example of betting on the wrong horse. Corgi could have gone either way on that turret issue, but someone/something guided the direction to that most disliked Martin dorsal turret -- which depicts the aircraft in its current form. Oh well, I didn't buy one either, even though the original sits 60 kms down the road from me. I may have considered this plane with the ORIGINAL turret, but certainly not this lame substitute. I just think the CWHM should have gone the extra mile to create that FN turret, considering it is integral to the story -- sheesh! Dare I say it? -- everbody else does! JPN

| And now for another interesting Canadian Mk III Halifax suggestion: How about "Jake Sent Me" as seen HERE. An interesting story about a 'classic Canadian' Mk III with some solid victories -- not to mention -- the original nose art ACTUALLY still exists at the Canadian War Museum. (There are 13 more at this site to look at HERE -- do indulge!) ![]() Photo: 'Jake Sent Me' in Canadian War Museum. And to further that . . . : I'm sure a number of you here are saying "Why should I bother with that desert Halifax Mk V?" Well, as the story goes, on September 17, 1943, this aircraft towing a Horsa glider, was attacked by eight JU-88s. Its pilot, Flight Officer Norman, refused to jettison his glider and skillfully evaded cannon and rocket fire from the JU-88s. The glider crew released themselves to give Norman a better chance, and he made it to Sale on three engines following two rocket hits. His tail gunner, Sgt. Grant, received a DFM for shooting down one of the attackers, while Norman received a DFC. Following the completion of its service with No. 295Sq., DG396 was passed to No.148 (Special Duties) Squadron and eventually SoC on April 1, 1945. 'So what' you say? OK -- have you seen the gun camera photos of this event? WHOA!!!! (I trust Shamrock and Hornchurch have) Check it out HERE. You may wish to reconsider. JPN | |||||||||||||

| Re: "Friday the 13th" -- Then what? Administrator, its time for a survey to suggest the next Halifax. I'd opt for a Mk 2-1A in 502 Squadron Coastal Command colors WITHOUT the mid-upper turret just to make it completely different and get away from the poor turret situation. I never liked the Special Duties nose; it just didn't suit the Halifax, but it does offer more variations in stock Bomber Command colors. Re the debate on nose art differences as a sales gimmic, the same can be said of Corgi's Lancaster and they all seem to have sold well. As I recall, the Rockcliffe Museum had a number of salvaged panels of nose art from the No 6 Group Halifaxes. Can anyone confirm this? | |||||||||||||
