Corgi B-52 - opinions from new collector

Greetings all,

I'm a rather new collector in the world of diecast aircraft. I recently posted some questions on the Century Wings section, someone commented to my post that most likely I will become a true diecast "collector", can't stop at just one and they were correct. I have decided that my next purchase may the Corgi B-52. Since my local dealer does not have one in stock to have a look at, I was hoping some forum members could share their collective opinions on this model.
Such as, Is it a fairly accurate representation, It constructed in a quality manner, etc, etc,

Thanks in advance, also would appreciate any opinions on the Corgi diecast aircraft in general. I'm mostly interested post WWII to present era.

Oh, and one more thing, Are the Corgi aircraft made in a limited number. It seems that there were some aircraft released and are now unavailable, ???

Welcome to the forum, wp_913!
Personally, I like the Corgi B-52s, especially the NASA NB-52/X-15 combo. I think it is a quality mold, one of the better ones that Corgi has done. The 52s go well with the Vulcans and Victors. I'd recommend the big jet bombers along with the PBYs, the Canberras, the Buccaneers, and the RAF Sabres.
And, come to think of it, the Hunters and Meteors, IMO, are pretty good, too.
I'll defer to the WW1/WW2 fans to filll you in on Corgi's warbirds.
Some of the Corgi releases are limited edition; some are not. You'd have to check dealer websites to get more info along those lines.
Hope this helps.
Again, welcome aboard and have fun!

I have never seen any of the B-52s in person but folks on the board seem to like them.

Most Corgi's are limited editions. You can see the exact numbers on Tricatus' site: Unofficial Corgi Aviation Archive That is also THE place for Corgi photos.

Like every company Corgi has some great moulds, some good moulds, and some lousy moulds. They have 17 post war jets in 1/72, 6 jets in 1/144, and 7 helicopters in a mix of 1/72 and 1/48. In some cases they are the only company making a particular aircraft so if you want that plane you have to get the Corgi. I recommend looking through the Tricatus site and then searching this forum for information the specific models you are interested in.

Welcome. On the Tricatus site 1250 linked, don't forget to check out his Twinplane pictures and also the hobbymastercollector.com site.

The Diecast Aviation Web Site and Forum - Powered by vBulletin

This is a link to a pretty good UK site too and you may find it interesting.

There is a ton of info and photos on this and the UK site. Good luck. I have the Vietnam B-52 and love it.

I have a lead on the Duxford camo one (check Tricatus) for a good deal if you're interested. You can PM me if you want to.

Good luck.

Leigh-Mallory and his big wings! Might as well stay on the ground for all the use they are!

Re: Corgi B-52 - opinions from new collector

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the info, I did purchase a Corgi helicopter, the Apollo recovery Sea King set, and it was very nicely done. So from the sound of I will most likely get the B-52, the early 1960's version. They are expensive, but they do come in very nice presentation boxes. Any other Corgi recommendations in the era that I collect ???

wp

I really like Corgi's B-52s (and I'm a Corgi critic). I think they are a very good representation of the BUFF. I did find that I had to permanently affix the landing gear in place, however. (Yes, Corgi has fiddly bits too!) I have three of them and they're all displayed gear down on the "ground". The wings have too much sag to them to be accurately displayed "inflight" IMO...

My personal favorite is Diamond Lil..Gotta love that business-looking Vietnam era SEA scheme and those external bomb racks.

Perry's currently has them on sale.

Corgi B-52s are very, very nice. See picture (granted, doesn't show detail, but anyway, gives you an idea)...

Re: Corgi B-52 - opinions from new collector

Hi All,

Well this is certainly an active forum with many great collectors, LOVE that photo too. Someone mentioned Perry's, what is is that. I have been purchasing my diecast aircraft from a local hobby shop, but it seems I will need to find some of my next acquisitions at an online dealer, any recommendations. And what about models that are no longer available at the regular retail stores ??? There are several aircraft that I would like to add to my collection, Corgi and others that are longer available on the open market, any ideas, I suppose eBay is an option, others ???

Re: Corgi B-52 - opinions from new collector

I would highly recommend the B-52 as one of the best 1:144 scale models that Corgi do. I only collect 1:72 scale at the moment because I prefer the detail that this scale gives, but of all the 1:144 models I've had the B-52 is my favorite. I had the X-15 one and it was excellent.

Perry's is a diecast seller with a web site (I belive a retail location too) -- he stocks lots of HTF models, at typically pretty high prices. Lately, however, he's been having some pretty darn good deals -- such as the rare Diamond Lil Corgi B-52 for $69 that I just picked up... just google Perry Aircraft. He's one of the best places to check for models that are not available elsewhere, if you're looking for older stuff it's worth placing a call to him as he's got lots of stuff that's not listed on the site.

Some of the major haunts for current models-- The Flying Mule, Aikens Airplanes, Onmark, Petes collectibles, Diecast Direct..
