| This Corgi range of helicopters consists of the Bell H-47, UH-1 Huey and the AH-1 Cobra. Does anyone collect this range? A while back a friend bought me an AH-1G, 'Gambler Guns', at a UK airshow from CHC. I really like the Grand Daddy of gunships! A couple of days ago I bought 'The Crystal Ship', also a G model. Quite looking forward to getting this one. I was also tempted to get the UH-1 but didn't like exposed screw below the nose. Some nice models available though. The AH-1s only have one recessed screw on the bottom in the middle. I'd really like a collectors edition AH-1J with the twin engines and 20mm cannon. Strange thing is when I've found US51204 AH-1J Cobra USMC, HML-367, it had the G model turrent. Only on TFM site did I see this model (pics) with the 20mm gun. Odd that. ![]() | ||||||||||||||

| Re: Corgi 1/48 Choppers The UH-1s are really quite good. Don't think I've ever been the least bit bothered about the screw when on display. Weird about the AH-1J - didn't have any problem on mine. | ||||||||||||||

ZS, I've got a couple of the Corgi UH-1's, my favorite being the Marine UH-1E USMC Frog Gunship with door mounted M-60's, rocket pods and platform mounted electrically fired M-60's. If you haven't gotten the FM Hueys ("D" models?) then I'd say get those instead. They're well done and IMHO are nicer than the Corgi's. I also have the FM UH-1C Army Gunship (Limitied Edition) and although some don't like the rivets, I think it's the best one available. It's extremely detailed and has lots of moving parts, i.e. pilot doors open/close, stabs move, etc..

I concur on your assesment Trex, I have one Huey from Corgi (dunno the part number from memory), and several Hueys from FM. In direct comparision the FM ones are way better. The Corgi one even seems a little smaller than the FMs. Check my collection threat for pictures of the helos side by side. Right on about the Special Version Huey. I have it, too. It is very pricey (if you pay list price for it) but it is worth the price. If you have little display space go for this one and you won't be disapointed. AA

| Appreciate your insights guys. What led me to the Corgis was the fact that most of my models proably still are Corgis, that and the fact that the Corgis are way cheaper. What about the AH-1s? | ||||||||||||||

Hi AA, you're right about the size differences with the two Hueys, hmmm.....never noticed that before! BTW, nice pictures you have there! I especially like the RAF F-117! Also, did you make the tarmac (that your Luftwaffe F-4 & Eurofighter is displayed on) or was it purchased from somewhere?

| Re: Corgi 1/48 Choppers Yes, the Corgi's are smaller than the FMs, but that's because they're completely different airframes! The Corgis are B/Cs and the FMs are ostensibly Hs. If you want a gunship, the Corgis are the only option. If you want a slick, the FMs are the only option. FM has made some of their Hs into gunships, which is ahistorical and while the finish and detailing may come off slightly better than the Corgis, they are ruined by the ridiculous pintle-mounted .50 cals. Hueys could not take a .50 cal mounted in that way. Yes, some Hueys did mount .50s, but not only using special improvised mounts, and they were as rare as Hens teeth. I dumped all of my FMs because they bugged me so much. The Corgis may have their problems, but if you want a nice representative Vietnam bird, go with Corgi. | ||||||||||||||

Sorry ZS, can't help you with the AH-1's because I don't have one (I gave my only one away to my uncle). Although from what I recall it was just okay. IIRC, the gun turret did not move/gun did not elevate so that was a big letdown. The detail didn't do much for me....otherwise it was great. ![]() If you're willing to shell out some bucks, the AH-64 from FM might be a better alternative. I also can't comment about the FM AH-1's because I've never seen them.....AA, got any pearls of wisdom concerning the FM Cobras?

Hover, what about the gatling mounted Hueys from FM (i.e. Cowboys)? Do you know if they're accurate, not in detail but historically speaking (because we all know that FM would never put out anything inaccurate detail wise! ) ![]() BTW, I know the airframes are different but from the pics it seems the models are slightly different scales.

| Re: Corgi 1/48 Choppers
Well, Hoverbug cleared that one up. I bought the Corgi Huey without everything along with some tanks. So I never bothered if its a B or D model. Really? Most people don't like the FM F-117 at all! The hypothetical RAF version is pretty rare I can tell you. But if you should be interested in one, I have another one mint in box. Send me an PM if you want. The tarmacs were done by modelbuilders. I either had them build for me or got them of ebay (the one with the F-15 on it). AA
