P-51B Speculation

The "Missouri Mauler" was released in August 2007. All the other Corgi P-51B variants aren't expected on the shelves until February 2008, six months latter. Why is that?

Is it possible the Mauler is a one off, and the next wave of B Mustangs will be from a different mold? I ask because the pre-production image on tricatus' site shows distinct fuselage differences between 'Tommy's Dad' and his production images of 'Missouri Mauler.' In particular, the shape of the nose, size of the chin air scoop, panel lines on the top of the cowling (access doors) and the canopy. The canopy on 'Tommy's Dad' is one piece of only the clear glass, including the half oval windows. The turtle deck is part of the metal fuselage. Mauler's canopy is one piece that extends all the way aft to the invasion stripe, and includes the turtle deck as part of the plastic, which is painted. The windshield on 'Mauler' is larger. Too many differences, unless there are two different molds.

Re: P-51B Speculation

Not sure but only interested in the P-51A / A36 version. Their B model is a dud as far as my money is concerned.

Re: P-51B Speculation

Be kinda nice if Corgi made the A36 Apache. I think the AAF used them as dive bombers so the flaps would also be different than the present mold.

Re: P-51B Speculation

The pre-pro pictures are probably just plastic kits that have been built up to photo for the catalog. I would suspect that it will look very similar to the first one.

Ooops!

I would love to see an A-36.

Note, though, that the pre-pro pics (3 P's!) of the F-86 showed a completely different model (and mold) than the one that was finally produced. The pre-pro was accurate, the production was not.

Re: P-51B Speculation

Looks like a HUGE difference of the front windshield for those F-86's

I bought just the Mig Mad Marine, and compared it to the Matchbox version, the Corgi boxtop, and pictures of the real thing, and decided this model is the oddest/wierdest/strangest product Corgi ever produced. Corgi had a chance to produce something really great; all they had to do was put in the same effort they put into the B-25, Ju 88, or P-40 (just to name three), but they didn't. It's almost as if the model was farmed-out to Atlas Diecast. (The windshield is just one of the many problems, which include an elongated nose cone, sloping nose in front of the windshield, too-long a canopy, and a chunky fuselage. However, the models faults seemed to be largely ignored--which is good for Corgi.)

On the other hand, when it comes to the P-51B, maybe Corgi reversed the release process, and is planning another new mold in the future to replace the Mauler. If the Mauler was a one-off, it would become a true collectors' item! You pays your money and you takes your chances...

Right on the money, Celtic!

Re: P-51B Speculation

I think the Corgi B still could have some life in it. Not much but some. I look forward to the Tuskeegee version. Just saw this plane at GML and it was one of the most striking. Have not heard Gemini is doing a red tail and the Eagles is out of my range right now. Could be a winner.
