| JU 88 AA36704 Italy?? I've attached a few snaps which are not in the same league as those taken by Tim on his Tricatus site. First of all I have to say that this bird is worth having IMHO. The 'Vulcan' cannon upper nose gun has been rectified. The paint scheme is very well done and seem very effective. The radar antennae, and the cockpit look good with just a single rear MG. The ventral gondala has also gone giving the aircraft a much sleeker shape. The bombs and long range fuel tanks also add to the overall look. Be careful when removing it from the box as the lower radio aerial is prone to breakage as is the fragile radar set up. There is a lot of confusion to where this aircraft served but it is not Italy (as it says on the packaging) as far as I can tell. Rzym, and Wlochy are in Poland and Toskania is Polish for Tuscany as far as I can make out. Confusing? The white theatre band is also confusing as I think that yellow was the band colour of the Eastern Front. Perhaps some of the 'experten' can clear this up? | |||||||||||||

I have to agree with you about the bomb rack color looking a wee bit odd, but other than that plane looks to be possible future purchase.

Hi Shamrock, I'm certainly no 'experten', but after studying a/c for 35 + years, you obviously pick up a thing or two along the way. That paint scheme is known in general German WW.II terms as a 'Wellenmunster' pattern..... (you often saw similar schemes, same style, but different colours (RLM 75/76) on (say) Me.110-'G' series nightfighters) Yeah, you're right in what you say about the " Theatre-Bands " that appear on the undersides of the wings & wrapped around the rear fuselage.......... ( in a nutshell........) White (theatre-band) = Mediterrainian (Italy, Corsica, etc....) Yellow ( " " - " " ) = Eastern Front (Russia etc.....) To Mikeb1958 Though they may not be depicted accurately (or might ?), there is a chance that they may well have been painted Green Early Last year (as the forum was 'hotting-up' !) there was a discussion going round about Green or Black propellor-blades on German aircraft of WW.II. They generally left the Factory painted in a standardised colour.... RLM. 70 Schwarzgrun (Black-Green) a dark shade, Green nonetheless The colour represented on these racks, is MUCH more reminicient of RLM. 71 Dunklegrun (Dark-Green) somewhat lighter still These two shades were used as the major (upper) camouflage schemes on He.111's, Do.17's & Ju.88's used during the Battle-of-Britain, as well as very early-war (late '39 - early '40) Me.109's. You have to be aware that any bomb-racks that were 'Retro-fitted' - were refered to as 'Rustatz' - packages of racks/ammo/guns (like, say the MK.103 or MK.108 'gondola' packs, like those found under certain Me.109's wings These were added "in the field" so to speak - arriving by train, or truck, to a remote airfield, so that the particular K.G. (or J.G.) could be fitted out with various/varying 'Rustatz' , in order to carry out certain missions, with required weapons. As paint supplies (much) further-afield could be 'irregular' (to say the least), they may have been painted-up in what was available As the war went on, German a/c may have (generally) used standardised RLM colours, but the schemes were more sporadic/varied..... (hence why they hold such a big 'attraction' to modern-day aircraft Modellers, in their extreme variations........ as opposed to RAF Green/Grays, or USAAF Olive-drab) Does look odd though, those racks - nice-looking Ju.88 though !!!!!!!

| Re: JU 88 AA36704 Italy?? When I first saw a picture of this plane in Corgi's 2007 catalog, I was put off by the heavy-handed application of the wavy RLM 76 lines on the upper surface. So I checked various sources and confirmed that such squiggly lines were usually more subdued. There's an artist's rendition of this plane on the Wings Palette website ( WWII, Bombers, JU-88, Page 3 ) which, I presume, is based on an actual picture. Here, the squiggles are not as prominent---hence more effective as camouflage--and the fuselage band is white as Corgi has it. There are no bombs under the outer wings, however, the plane is identified the same way as Corgi has it, as operating in Poland. All in all, I'm happy that I abstained on this one. | |||||||||||||

| Re: JU 88 AA36704 Italy?? I really look forward to this bird. Thanks for the pics and thanks for the commentary Hornchurch! As far as the Wellenmunster pattern being too white, I agree but I don't think it's bad enough to wreck the look of the plane in the display case and will be quite an eye catcher and conversation piece. Hope to see mine soon. Only paid about $72 shipped too. ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: JU 88 AA36704 Italy?? Found I had a couple of sources that had some information regarding Corgi JU 88 AA36704. Aero Detail 20 on the JU88 and Squadron Publications number 1085 Junkers Ju 88 in action part 1 both had some pictures of this plane. Aero Detail has a nice template on page 58 of Ju88A-6 W.Nr 4198 KG54 late 1943 and Squadron publication also has a similar template of same aircraft. Both template point towards wavy camouflage pattern actually being fairly distinct, more so with the Aero Detail template. Cannot go strictly with templates, and it is good that between the two publications there are three pictures of the actual plane. Aero Detail 20 has on shot of plane on page 64. This picture is a 3/4 port side shot of the nose section of plane and tends to show wavy pattern being fairly distinct. Squadron publication has two additional pictures on page 34 (Including one already covered in Aero Detail) with one picture being 3/4 port side rear shot and the other showing port wing and engine detail. All three pictures really tend to show wavy camouflage pattern being fairly distinct, and maybe Corgi was not too far off the mark on their effort. While looking through the references I did come across some minor discrepancies though. Pictures and reference material indicate that the port wing is missing a FuG 217 "Rostok" Radar antenna on top of outer wing and two FuG 101 Radar antennas same wing underneath. Diagram show FuG 217 would have had three smaller antennas on bottom of starboard wing also. Both the templates show this aircraft these radar antennas configuration. Squadron publication template and one picture is labeled Ju 88A-6/U which would match this antennal layout. Radar stuff fairly small fry and could be corrected if desired. For most part looks to be fairly nice looking model, with maybe the only exception being the bomb racks on wing. my resource material really doesn't really support it. Overall not a bad looking model and might actually fork out for one. | |||||||||||||
