Thumbs up Re: CORGI plastered across the bottom

I've noticed the 'Corgi' logo, but I've also noticed it is somewhat discreet and very clean/crisp. My guess is it is a throw-back to their days in the '60s on their cars that all had diecast bottoms. I see this all the time my Brother's collection from the '60s. I have no problem with it -- in fact, I like it. After all, Corgi is a 'heritage' company with a fine reputation in the general public.

Re: CORGI plastered across the bottom

Actually, I call them toys (and I let everyone I know know that I know that that is what they are [as far as "I's", "know's", and "that's" goes, that's got to be some kind of record]), but when I'm gone, my son can put them on ebay and call them collectables!

I like the way you think. For some reason the word collectible brings to mind what you might find in the Grand Ole Opre hotel gift shop or maybe even that set of Elvis limited addition collector plates. Oh I do call them collectibles on occasion, but still know they are just really cool looking diecast airplanes I wish I had as a kid.

Re: CORGI plastered across the bottom

So it seems that CORGI's claim to fame goes far beyond their quality and involves mostly their history and heritage as one of the first and biggest names in metal die-cast. Do most of us prefer to have their name on the models then? How about just the stand?

Just by doing the bean counting, this thread has netted 2 apposed to logo on plane with 9 in favor. Just from those numbers it would tend to lean towards no change warranted. Could be wrong though, but thats were the responces pointed.

Okay, if these models were meant to be "high value, museum quality" reproductions I would really be upset about Corgi molding their name on the bottom of each model. The fact is that while not really a toy to be played with out in the dirt or tossed through the air, Corgi's models are still "toys". And toy companies DO put their names on their products in one way or another. So this is consistent with current industry practice and it's really not a big deal. Enjoy your models and if the logo bothers you, either file it off, or don't look underneath.

Re: CORGI plastered across the bottom

I think that they are supposed to be detailed display replicas not meant for children to play with. They are not the best but they appear to think they are - given the prices they are charging. As such, I believe the name should go. These CORGI's are not your fathers CORGI's. They are not meant to be toys. They cost upwards of $30.00 and climbing!

Ok, revised bean count appears to be 2 apposed and 10 in favor. Looks like there is starting to be a movement in support of retaining Corgi's logo (And there was much rejoicing). I do wish prices were lower, but it is gotten to the point where it is more expensive to build it your self (Talking about extras like photo etched and resin parts).

You could be on to something here -- the cost of D-I-Y (from my perspective anyhow) is largely in 'time' -- which I would hazzard a guess -- is the prime reason most of us collect these pre-built, pre-painted models in the first place. Speaking for myself, I just don't have any for the kit build route. When I was 10-12, I made all the time in the world (to the detriment of my grades!) for this. Today, as adults, I suspect many of us don't have the time to dedicate to building a 1/72 scale Lancaster / B-17 / B-29 / Halifax, whatever, kit with all the detailing we require. Then of course, there is the cost of frustration, as not all of us could rise to the skill level we hoped we had. For this alone, I love this hobby as it becomes 100% inclusionary! No one is left out!

In my case, s-p-a-c-e is also an issue. To build a model airplane kit in a 1 bedroom apartment (especially with the wife around) just isn't going to happen, as you need space to lay out sub-assemblies, painted bits, etc. And if you become overly productive, you arrive at the same place some of us are in currently -- lack of display space -- but THAT doesn't seem to stop us from collecting diecast(!)

I haven't even touched on the stinky glue and paint part or stray shavings and flashing bits floating about yet.

Personally, I think 'lanslide' has hit the nail on the head by terming these diecast aviation objects we lust over as: "detailed display replicas". I think that term is the best I have heard so far. (I may consider adding in 'aviation' between 'detailed' and 'display' to be 'detailed aviation display replicas'.)
