Re: PBY-5 Catalina "Black Cat"

I agree, I have always been partial to the black paint schemes of almost all aircraft types. I can't wait until this one arrives. It seems like a diecast piece has been arriving about every four days. I LOVE IT!!

How does your wallet feel about it ... ?

Re: PBY-5 Catalina "Black Cat"

Well i guess i'll have this one coming too.
I forgot i put in a pre-order for this one months ago.
Just got my shipping confirmation this evening..
Boy this is taking a little hit on my CC since it's Christmas time.
Wife looked at me and said....You are not to buy for yourself during the Holidays...I told her the truth it was a pre-order from months ago...I can't control how Corgi ships them out...Then she said ok...
But no more for you give me the cc now..
Now how i'm i going to get away with the A-10's that are coming tommorow

I've been putting a little aside every pay period for my habit, so the sting has been taken out it. It's nice, kind of like Vegas money, write it off before you get started so it doesn't make you sad when you spend it.

Re: PBY-5 Catalina "Black Cat"

That is what I do. My wife calls it my happy money.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

With me, it's the storage space in addition to the money. I already have SNAFU Snatchers taking up half my closet in the huge box. How can I fit another one in there, besides the upcoming Ju-88? Too big to display out of the box, box is too big to store. I'm going to have to build some shelves in the garage!

Re: PBY-5 Catalina "Black Cat"

Got mine coming to me and I'm looking forward to getting it to check it out more closely. Looked at all Corgi's PBY's and this is my favorite of current releases, though I'll probably get a Midway "Strawberry" PBY if one ever gets released. The whole Black Cats thing appeals to me, the PBYs getting to sneak in at night to wreak havoc after the hammering they had gotten at the beginning of the war is one heck of a comeback story. Black Cat PBY's also acted as Dumbos, which is why I passed on Snafu Snatchers.

AA36104 NEW!
Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina "Black Cat"
VP-34, Air Fleet Wing 17, Lt. Pfleeger, New Guinea
A 1/72nd Scale Diecast model from Corgi Classics

The squadrons only insignia came into being during its first tour of duty in the South Pacific in early 1944. VP-34 was one of ten Navy patrol squadrons to be designated Black Cats during the war. The nickname came from the flat black paint applied to the Catalina's and the nighttime strike missions assigned to these squadrons. On 26 December 1943, VPB-34 (the VPB designation was not formally approved until the following October) flew to their new operating base at Samarai on the eastern tip New Guinea. Samarai was a small base, with seaplane ramp, dollies for moving the planes and a small hangar that could only shelter a Cat's nose. All other maintenance was done outside. The living conditions were fairly decent, and the crews got to see movies every night when they weren't flying, even when it was raining. But there were plenty of mosquitos, so everyone to atabrine pills, which made them turn yellow. After the pilots made a few familiarization flights with VP-52, the squadron started doing what the Black Cats were noted for: all-night 13 to 17 hour missions to attack Japanese shipping, barges, shore installations, and accasional submarines; delivering and extracting scouts; and evacuating troops and rescuing survivors. This aircraft was flown by Lt. Pfleeger in 1944 for a rescue of three survivors of a B-24 that had ditched after a raid on Truk -the Japanese "Gilbralter of the Pacific", the seemingly impregnable base for its combined and Fourth Fleets. It was also used as a ferry point for aircraft from factories in Japan to theaters of operations in New Guinea and the Solomons.
