2nd Patches

What is it with this plane?? My books with pics of the real thing show the old style tail gun. The Corgi box shows pics OF THE MODEL with the old style tail gun. But the actual plane has the Cheyenne tail turret.

What happened???? I've got #725. Did they correct the error later on?

My guess would be the pic on the box is of the pre-production model. That's Corgi's SOP for most box illustrations. The ol' bait n' switch... I've got one too, but I didn't really look at the tail gun. I don't even remember if I've taken it out of the box yet.

True. Look at the Navy SK. Yellow/Orange nose box and inside. Not too bad except I'd prefer the yellow. Bait and switch...I was thinking that same thing before.

Leigh-Mallory and his big wings! Might as well stay on the ground for all the use they are!

So they get it right on the pre-pro model then botch it later on?? I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around that one.

Re: 2nd Patches

AllenTC2,
Hey there.

I'm betting that it was a cost cutting move on Corgi's behalf. The designer created the plane accurately, then Corgi said it cheaper to change the livery instead of changing the mould. Hence, we have the model with the tail section as it is.

Re: 2nd Patches

ALL the Corgi B-17s have the Cheyenne turret?? That sucks.....I'm not such a purist that every little rivet must be accurate, but DAMN.....the whole tail section? If it weren't for my wife liking B-17s, I'd be eBaying that puppy.

Re: 2nd Patches

I complained on the old forum about Corgi using the cheyenne turret on planes that shouldn't have it like 'Nine 'O' Nine'. No one said a word like I never posted. Though I do know there are guys that don't care how many inaccuracies there are on a plane as long as they like the "Overall look".

Oh well.......

Neither does the 1/72nd scale R.A.F. Coastal Command version (which is accurate in that respect) - although I have a photo of ONE that DID....
42-98021, RAF serial HB791, serving with 220 Sqdn.

Many USAAF '17's were retro-fitted with Cheyenne's from Spring of '44 as they apparently increased the all round field of fire by 15%.

42 - 38201 (2nd Patches) 15th A.F......... was apparently delivered on 13th Jan '44 ..... finally crashing on take off, on the 24th Aug '44 & then salvaged for parts.

Personally, I'd display her front end on, & relax about the back.....most folks won't know the difference (unless you point it out).

That's what my buddy next door does.I went over there the other night to look at the B-17 Because i have never seen the Corgi one and he had no gaps at all on the bomber but when i looked at the gun turret he ask me what i was doing i told him about what you guys are saying about it.He smiles and says "Them mates know their planes as well as i do"I hide by displaying that way...
