So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Hey there folks,
Now that everyone has had some time to mill it over, what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Does the general mould look good?

What do you all think of the available schemes? What about the two upcoming schemes that are slated? (Yeah, yeah, no Battle of Britian scheme yet, I know. Save the clamouring for that for another thread. I'm with you already! )

Are the load out (Or lack of load.) accurate? (One of the current planes comes with bombs, the other doesn't.)

How bad does the 20MM cannon in the co-pilots seat look? Do pictures do it justice, or merely over emphasize it? (From the Trictus pictures it looks a bit silly. Also, doesn't seem right compared to the JU-88 show I saw on the tube last week.)

As I've stated elsewhere, I'm cutting back a little for a bunch of reasons. While I'd really love to have a JU-88 in general, do I really need one of the current, or currently proposed schemes? I'm thinking that if I've got as far as asking you all, then no, I really don't need it. Then again, I'm very willing to be swayed.

I've got some pre-orders that I'm reviewing and wondering should I kill this and devote that $70 elsewhere, or let it ride and see what happens? I've got a BUNCH of things I'm itching for and only have so much time and attention to devote to the planes that I have.

If I cut this bird out, that is two other birds I can add (Corgi Dauntless and the Gemini Huey anyone?) on top of the other birds that I'd probably have more time and space for. (IXO Macchi 205 and Tony, Corgi P-40 Boss Hogg and Texas Longhorns and Corgi Galland)

Thanks folks

Anything for a weird life.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I dont know how acurate it is but I like my low lands Ju88
Except for the fact that it is not well balanced on its stand.
It seems that, unless you ad a cruch, you can only display it flying upwards.
I prefer strait and level

I have the Finland 88 and I am very pleased with it.. The front gun is probably oversized, but overall it looks good..

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I have the first two Ju-88s out so far and generally the basic mold looks reasonable. However, as many have pointed out the cockpit guns are much too large for 30-caliber weapons and there are other problems. For example the ventral antennae on the lower fuselage are a bit too big and not shaped like the real thing. The same complaint applies to the upper antenna that goes into the cockpit - here it needs a wider base at the bottom. On the plus side, the landing light on the left wing was very well done - a nice surprise. Corgi could have chosen far better liveries for its initial efforts with this famous warbird and ,hopefully, we will see some BOB and Balkans campaign versions in 2008. I hope that the bomber versions all carry external ordinance. Also on the plus side is the potential to adapt the current Ju-88 mold to create a Ju-88C, the day fighter option with a solid nose packed with guns, or with some greater effort, the lethal nightfighter, the Ju-88G. If they pull these off we may see some really outstanding liveries.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I've got the desert Ju 88, which makes a nice addition to my Desert display. The only real complaint I have is that the forward machine gun looks more like a bazooka!!!

I have plans on eventually purchasing another Ju 88, but the other schemes haven't done much for me. I guess I will be waiting until they do a BoB scheme.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Just picked up the Finland version, haven't had it out on display yet, but couldn't pass it up with it being a new Luftwaffe mold. Will also get the desert version in due time, but my dealer has several of those left and I scooped the last of the second release. It has its faults, but I think all in all a nice model. I'd at least recommend 1 of these beautes.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

This is strange, the forward machine gun on mine (tan cammo, Crete 1942) is just fine. Did Corgi correct this after the initial run, or were just some models fitted with the wrong size machine gun?

I really like my Ju-88...

Have the Crete version. It complements my MTO collection and I rather like the desert livery. If they had added muskets instead of machine guns I still would have bought it. It's a JU-88 and not likely to be repeated by any other manufacturer in this livery. So enjoy.

I have the Finland JU, and I have to say I love it. I believe it is a very good replicia regardless of the "big barrel Gun". This model is by far one of Corgi's best casting in my view. It is a must for every collection.

I have BOTH versions and like them. Lots of detail, despite the large gun in the front. Just think of it as a "experimental version" with a 30mm cannon.
