Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Besides the other comments, I am really bothered by the price of this bird. I know all about the Corgi price increase and cost increases in general, but I am having an especially hard time with the price of this model.

I hear ya O.C. -- that's why I don't own one yet, though I suspect an improved BOB effort MAY sway me. (The price on this one is made a bit more "reasonable" by the MSRP of the new Mosquito -- $60 -- egad! )

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

RE: Pricing - Yeah, I hear you. I'm getting a little turned off in general about pricing. I'm not going to be brazen (Or foolish?) enough to say, "I will not pay more than xxx for this kind of bird." as that kind of thinking will just get me bitter, teed off and out of the diecast business (So to speak.) all together.

However, given that, I am trying to look harder at my diecast purchases. I want to spend more individual time "playing" with each bird I get, hence my long post elsewhere about the Lysander.

Plus, when I get 6 planes in my basket and the pricing comes to $200.00-ish I'm starting to think twice about what I might want versus want I REALLY want. I don't ever want to get to the point that I'm "rivet counting" but I'm going to question little things more that I might have overlooked previously. Hence mu JU-88 questions here.

Conversely, I want to rave about the birds I really like even more. Hopefully I balance out and still add something to the forum.

Thanks folks, please keep the commentary both pro and con coming.

Old Crow, I bought this model in Canada for $71.95 cdn. ..around $61.00 us. Would that be a reasonable price to you? PM me if you think so and I will pass on the details. Swoop.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Well if you recall this model was one of the tail end 2006 releases. My wife purchased it as a pre order thinking it would arrive by Christmas which was the expected due date. The price then was only around $60-64, however we all are aware what happened Jan 1 2007. Once the new prices rolled out, ALL Corgi models were effected. A prime example is the Typoon which had a pre order price of $29.99. Clearly it is being treated like the other 2007 releases which reflect the price increase at $34.99.

Pricing is always a concern nowadays, but with Corgi selling out of many models before they are even produced, I am still filling out a preorder in hopes of getting certain ones while they are available.. Yes, I know that just because Corgi sells out, it doesn't mean there will be a shortage, but it is peace of mind for me.. I am also VERY selective about what I buy, but there are planes that I want atleast one of.. The Ju-88 is one of those planes.. I may not buy another until they come out with a different variant (nightfighter) but I have the one I like now.. And I don't have to worry about not getting it later..

hworth, I'm with you on that. I see this plane as a MUST for any WWII collector. From comparing the model to pictures of the real thing, the only real criticism I have is the machine-gun issue, but as it turn out it was missing on mine and it looks better that way (plus may not be too hard to correct later). Yeah, the canopy top-rear machine-gun "bubbles" are very slightly exagerated, but it's really not bad at all (comparing to pictures of the real thing).

As for price, sure it's a bit more expensive, but If I'm a WWII collector, I'd rather add this to the collection than 3 P-51s on top of the 12 I already have (or whatever). The Ju-88 is too important. But if quantity (of models) is all that matters, then so be it. Perhaps I'm biased because I collect 1/48, and prices for those are higher anyway (e.g. Carousel One fighter = $69).

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Hworth and FormerViperDriver,
Hey there guys.

I think I should perhaps modify my statement slightly to take your points into account. I agree that the JU-88 is an important plane, and I want at least one in my fleet. I guess I'm asking, do I really need one of the first couple of releases? I'm sure there is going to one of these that I will want, and I'm not worried about finding whatever bird I finally decide upon. However, if I get the nightfighter version (Which I'm sure I will unless Corgi makes such a glaring error that it comes out as a bi-plane so something.) or the upcoming version with the cannon in the lower gondola, do I also need one of the two released so far?

I've noticed that in my fleet I have LOTS of birds out, but only two, or maybe three of each kind at any one time. With the bombers and jets, it is one at a time. If I'm only going to have one at a time, do I need 3-4 different liveries, or to a lesser degree variants? Sure, I can swamp them out, and often do just that. However, I also end up in situations like with my B-25s where I own 4-5 of them. I've got Bats Out Of Hell out, the new Green Parrot bird in the closet that I'll swamp out and three somewhere in my garage that I'll have time for who-knows-when?

I also KNOW that Corgi is going to come out with at least 6, if not 10 JU-88's. If I wait two years to pick one up, no big loss for me. I've got plenty of P-40's and Gladiators to fill that (temporary) void.

Anything for a weird life.

Thanks for the kind offer, Swoop. I already have one, but it was painful (price-wise, Skunky, before you reply ).

I am going to wait and think long and hard about a second (probably would only consider a nightfighter). However, I would still be interested in knowing your source, for future reference, so feel free to PM me with the intel. Thanks again.
