Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I know this is not a great picture, but please someone tell me where that "large gun/bazooka" is located. I don't get it. The machine gun on mine is the same as all the others shooting backwards. What gives?

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

FormerViperDriver,
Hey there.

Thanks for posting the picture. All the previous pictures I've seen show a machine gun in the co-pilots seat that looks REALLY large, and downright distracting. Its more like a cannon than a light machine gun.

This is a link to Tricatus' web site pictures.

http://www.tricatus.co.uk/aa36701.htm

If folks are informing me that this is not a big deal (Both literally and figuratively.) than I'll get over my reservations. Like I said earlier, I'm looking for reasons that I might be dissapointed and if my reservations are unfounded, I'll gladly be swayed. (Granted, "looking for reasons to be dissapointed" is often NOT a heathly way of approaching diecast, and I'm not looking to for a bash session, just trying to find more time with each of my planes. If that means I cut a few out, or put off a few purchases, so be it.)

Anything for a weird life.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

djjeffhall,

OK, after seeing the Tricatus picture, I see the problem. I looked closer at my model, and there is indeed a small hole in the front co-pilot's windscreen, but mine was apparently missing the weapon that fires through that. Looking at pictures of the real thing, there should indded be a machine gun there (at least on some earlier Ju-88 models, but not all apparently). The Tricatus picture does show a weapon much larger than it should be. I think mine looks better without the gun (the hole is pretty small, I didn't even notice it until now). I may be able to figure out a way to put in a correct-size gun later.

I really don't like the look of that over-large machine gun, personally. Matter of taste.

FormerViperDriver,
Hey there.

Yeah, you've got it right. There should be a gun in the front window, but it was a light machine gun (7.92mm?) and not the MONSTER gun that Corgi fitted. It's kind of silly that I'm quibbling over such a minor thing but it just stands out a little to much for my tastes.

I could be wrong, but I think the radar equiped night fighters and the versions with the gun pack in the nose did not have the co-pilots gun. The "regular" bomber versions did have that gun.

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I've got both aircraft and I'm very happy (mainly) with them. The nose mounted 'telegraph pole' really bugged me on both aircraft until I decided to rectify it. Take a sharp scalpel and starting at the base ahead of the breech scrape in a straight line towards the muzzle. The gun rotates and eventualy you will have removed (gently) enough material to make it look like a normal 7.92 MG. I then used a permanent marked to get back to black.
The bomb load and the black underside make the Finnish model more appealing IMHO. I've seen the new 'Lister' JU-88 on a dealers site showing a large cannon in the bottom half of the glazed nose which I feel is much more accurate. Whether I want to shell out €108 for a paint scheme that is practically the same as the Finnish model to gain a proper cannon remains to be seen!
Roll on the BoB, night fighter, and anti ship versions.

The pictures of night fighter versions that I have show no machine gun at that position. I'm with Shamrock, I can't wait for a night-fighter version. That would be sweet!

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

Its no good I just cannot bring myself to buy the JU88 it just does not look right. I had a good look around the one at Hendon and checked over the cockpit and aft gun positions and IMHO Corgi got the proportions and size very wrong. To give Corgi the benefit of the doubt maybe the 1/72 scale makes the thing look wrong (1/48 would perhaps have been better).

Much as I like the plane i shall have to hold off this one ( I might just be tempted by a BoB one though after all I am only human). Maybe?

This is a personal opinion and perhaps I am too critical as many of you seem to be pleased with it. (this from the guy that bought an IXO P40). Yes I know

Jim,
Don't be so hard on yourself. I bought myself and IXO P-40 as well. (It's an N model. I needed an N model so leave me alone! )

Re: So what is the general consensus on the JU-88?

I was surprised to see how small it is. I thought it would have been at least as big as a heinkel or a mitchell. No its really small.
I am bothered by the antena that sticks downwards. Very easy to break.

I love Polikarpov
