Re: US35212 Robert H. Vaught P-40E-1

The P-40 and P-39 are not highly regarded as fighters, yet somehow the Soviets have a long list of aces with great success in them against the Luftwaffe BF109's and Fw190's. One account that stands out is a Red Star P-39 downing 3 Fw190's in a single mission! That reminds me - we need a 1/72nd P-39!!!

Yeeeesssssssssssss we do!

Quite easily - Not my cup of tea.

I've heard that the rear mounted engine had a propensity to travel though the cockpit on crash landings, taking the pilot with it.

Its still a major player in WW11 so its a must for any collection. Well after all we must aim to have the "Full Set" and theres lots to come yet. Do17, Do217, etc etc.

God Bless America.

A P40 is one thing, but a P39 - the mind boggles...

Which I've never really understood why.

It pretty much failed the western Airforces, so why still make it and not cancel it? I'm sure Bell could have switched the production capacity to a more effective plane (P47/P51 even P40 ).

Ooops!

Guys, couldn't agree more that we need a 1:72 P-39. And don't forget that it is on Hobby Master's list of new moulds for release this year :-)

I will admit its a strange one but it was used very effectively by the Russians.
There used to be one flying at the airshows around Britain (I have several videos of it, lovely cobra nose art).

Well variety is the spice of life, and diecast, dare I venture.

Hey folks,
Don't completely dismiss the P-39. If I recall, Chuck Yeager said in his biography that it was his favorite airplane to fly.

Flown by superb pilots like him I don't doubt the P-39 could very well hold it's own. Just look at what the Russian pilots accomplished with this type.

Re: US35212 Robert H. Vaught P-40E-1

Would'nt liked to have been on the receiving end of that 37MM cannon when fitted. If I remember correctly the RAF when they had one on test felt that the aircraft could not survive in the ETO. For some reason the two stage turbo intercooler was removed preventing a good aircraft from becoming a superb aircraft. A bit like the decision not to fit the Westland Whirlwind with Merlins. Lost opportunities indeed. I thought this was a P-40 thread.
