US36604 NEW!
Lockheed P-38J-10 Lightning "California Cutie"
42-67916 – 1st Leutenant Richard Loehnert, 55th Fighter Squadron / 20th Fighter Group, Kings Cliffe, Northhamptonshire July 1944
2110 produced | 8.5" (21.6cm) wingspan

A 1/72nd Scale Diecast model from the "D-DAY M U S E U M" limited edition series by Corgi Classics

Assigned to the 55th FS from November 1943 to November 1944, Dick Loehnert flew 70 missions and 300 hours during his combat tour. A fair number of these flights were performed at the controls of this long-lived P-38, which bore one of the largest mission tallies ever seen on a USAAF fighter in the ETO. The P-38 completed 56 escort missions (top hat and cane), 16 top-cover missions (umbrella) and 11 sweeps (broom), while the six locomotives beneath the canopy were for strafing credits and the two swastikas denoted two Bf 109s shot down by Loehnert on July 7, 1944.

Definite purchase - I think this looks even better than Scat-II.

Ooops!

Saw this in person today at my local hobby store and it looks great! Olive drab looks way better than SCAT II. Graphic on port side is very well done. This is going to be the one to get!

Cool Re: US36604 Lockheed P-38J-10 Lightning "California Cut

This P38 does look very good indeed. Thing is though, I quite fancied those D-Day stripes on Scat II! Given prices, both is not really an option. There really is some fine diecast out there these days. Pity my wallets' just not big enough to make me happy.

They still have them on the bottom of California Cutie.

Aahhh! Didn't know that! Say, this bird reminds me of the P38 that went down at an airshow in the UK around the same time the Mossie also crashed. The S and the triangle stand out in my memory. Same aircraft/unit?

OK, had another look at the pic, I'm a bat, a blind bat. I think I'll get some coffee now.

Re: US36604 Lockheed P-38J-10 Lightning "California Cut

I like my P38s and my P51s to be predominantly silver/aluminium as regards finish ... never figured out why exactly
