| Re: Coastal Command collection complete?
Yeah, they were. Brace yourself futher down the line for an (as yet to be announced, sometime in the distant future) additional a/c...... Halifaxes were a mainstay of Coastal Command, so a version of one of them will be a sure-fire certainty for the future. They sunk loads of U-boats, & one (White-painted example) even bombed & sank a German E-boat, from 11,000ft in the Bay of Biscay. There are also numerous recorded 'dogfights' between Halifaxes & Fw.200 Condor's, Arado Ar.196's & Ju.88's - even one between a Halifax attacking a Blohm & Voss Bv.222 Wiking (bigger than a Sunderland & bristling with cannons !!). Another suggestion, ALTHOUGH post-war is the up & coming C.C. Lancaster in all over Grey (though personally I'd stick to the White a/c).

| Re: Coastal Command collection complete? I have to say I'm looking forward to the Lanc. Did the Nimrod ever get issues to Coastal Command, or had they been disbanded at that point? If so then the Mk1 issued last year might just sneak in under the wire. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Coastal Command collection complete? Thanks for the help guys! Spinnaker: How could I have forgotten this one? I'll watch for a good sale on that CC PBY (I think I just overlooked it due to the diorama). Thanks!Timbo: I do have the 209 Sqn. PBY If you, or anyone, has an idea.Hornchurch: That would be so cool to get a CC Halifax! I hope you aren't toying with my affections. Now wouldn't that make a great diorama subject to have a Halifax flying over a surfaced Uboat? If only they could make a practical 1:72 Sunderland in CC colors. A person can dream can't he? Thanks again. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Coastal Command collection complete?
Hi Black 6 No doubt at all, about the Grey/Green camo' 209 Sqdn PBY being a Coastal Command operated a/c (serial No VA.703 - WQ*M). You see, that's the same Sqdn, colours & fuselage codes, as the actual Catalina (serial No AH.545) that re-sighted & shadowed the German Battleship Bismark, leading to her eventual destruction. Only difference (we're nitpicking here !), is that AH.545, the 'Bismarck hunter' wore WQ*Z & had the early war A.1 type fuselage 'cockade' or Roundel, (as it has come to be known), on each side...... A.1 Roundel = wider spacing on the Yellow/Blue/White & Red, as opposed to........ C.1 Roundel = narrow spacing on above colours, so as to aid/reduce compromising the camouflage effect/pattern. Tri's site has VA.703 - WQ*M dated as October '41 - yet no RAF plane was wearing the later C.1 type Roundel (as depicted on the model), at that stage in the war......IF, of course, THAT YEAR shown IS CORRECT ?. I.I.R.C. the C.1 type roundel came out in mid-1942 (the earliest pic' I have to hand right now is a 'Short-Nose' B.24 Mk 1 ; serial No AM.916/G ('G' = for Guard whilst on the ground - due to it's secret ASV Radar pack). Photo' is taken in May '42 ; White fuselage sides, with a high-demarcation line - also wearing a C.1 type fuselage Roundel (like the 'Pembroke' Cat). So, May '42 = so far, the earliest White -sided C.C. bird I've seen, although the low demarcation Green/Grey scheme (as depicted on the 'Pembroke Cat', is dead accurate, & also appropriate to Sunderlands of that time. Coastal Command Halifaxes (Merlin-engined GR.II's from Nov '42 onward) were initially carrying their Bomber Command paint-scheme, but the Red fuselage codes, were replaced by Grey. Feb '43 = Air-Ministry directive = All Halifaxes used for C.C. to have "strict plan-view (side) surfaces, to be painted White" ..obviously to aid camouflage from distance, against U-boats, as well as prowling K.G.40 - Ju.88's. One Halifax, took on seven (7 ) Ju.88's & survived (shot-up) returning to base.Timbo, Coastal Command were disbanded in Nov' 1969.
