Thumbs down Corgi JU-88 and P-38

I am sorry guys but I have to speak out and go against the grain.
I am disappointed after having owned both Matchbox P-38's and now having both the bong and Olds P-38's. There is no comparison in my honest opinion. Those of you that own a MB p-38 pull it out and look for yourself. My Olds P-38 lacks any rivet detail and my superchargers are a boring un-painted gray plastic no weathering anywhere, the standard prpopeller decals look awful and there are no stencils to be found anywhere on the fuselage or gas tank markings. These P-38's have nice paint, crisp markings, good scaling but look so new and factory fresh they lack any type of realism. An ink wash could have made some difference. I will be selling off both of these and putting the money spent to better use. I do hope Dragon or Hobbymaster do p-38's down the road. Sorry Corgi a bit too clean and toyish for me.

I also picked up the new JU-88 today the Finland one. What the hell is that stove pipe thing sticking out of the front windscreen supposed to be?? Not a gun in my book. Again, no realistic details, boring brown plastic exhausts, and very hazy windshields like the factory guy painting was nervous or hung-over. The single most glaring mistake was the cross was not painted on the airbrakes under the wings the brakes obscure the crosses . Sorry, but this one is bound for the bay until someone else delivers a more detailed look. Something about those rear gun bubbles looks off I think they are too big. Perhaps some redemption with another version by the pooch but these 2 models let me down. Next time you get a chance stare at a Hobbymaster Dauntless or Dragon p-51 and you will understand there is a new standard of workmandship expected in the market. Even the Glads, cats, and Swords showed what Corgi could do when they try hard enough.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Geez Louie what side of the bed did you get up on this morning.
The p-38 is not that hard to wash out the turbos.
Harry should be able to answer the Ju88 thing sticking out the front window.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Not to agree or disagree with any of the comments above, but in general I prefer a squeaky clean factory finish on my diecast models. I visualize my diecast collection not as miniature replicas of operational aircraft being pushed hard under appalling conditions - rather, as idealized representations of the prototypes at their best. It's all a matter of personal preference, and I can certainly understand those who prefer a weathered look.

The guns do look a little overscale on the Ju-88 for sure!

They are overscale

I was strongly considering getting a Ju88 for myself, and was quite excited when I learned Corgi was doing them. That is before I saw one in a local hobby store, I couldn't get over how big that gun was, Its almost a joke.
I'm sorry, but did they just assume that people wouldn't notice?

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Perhaps we can think of it as a field modification, say the ad-hoc installation of a 20 or 37 mm cannon?

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Well i did a little research since i don't know these Ju88 very well.
But yes by looking at some photos of the real Ju88 these look to be a little oversized.
Unless a special cannon maybe...???
I'll be getting mine... so i'll have to see.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Here is a pic I have of the 88's co-pilot gun and it is a pretty big gun..
(on a side note, I have many different pics that have different armament in the front, including a stub-nosed mg also in the same location..

As far as the P-38 goes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I like my P-38..

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

You took the thought right out of my head on the Corgi P-38's. I bought the Bong P-38 and I still like my MB P-38's better (for 1/3 the price). Granted, my MB's have plenty of warts but the Corgi's seem to be lacking (especially for $35-40) - lack of fine detail, poor fit & finish in nose, gear doors that fall off and general lack of WOW factor. I just saw the new Robin Olds release and I will pass - my MB version looks much better to me. I am real glad that I didn't sell off my MB collection!

IMHO - the door is still WIDE OPEN for a Dragon or HM P-38 release to really hit a home run. Does HAWK have his hotline to HM up and running?

I think they're outstanding!

I hope you didn't let that keep you from getting one. I believe that falls within the margin of error. Hworth18 told me that it looked as if they accidentally swapped the upper and lower machine guns.

I'm curious how the MB Lightning can be considered better with those inaccurate rockets. To me, that seems like a far more condemnable offense than lifeless turbochargers.
