Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

I concede on the rockets but for the mold detail I give matchbox 2 thumbs up.Even the guns on Matchbox are superior and you get lots of stenciling. if some guys like bright clean and crisp these are excellent models(the p-38's by corgi) I was just expecting so much more I guess. Too vanilla icecream for me. I will just have to wait for better or settle....................I think the marge is the better of the two though for more markings.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

I have not seen either of those plane first hand yet but I am getting the JU 88. I hope it does not look like it is factory fresh as I like to imagine these planes were shrunk with a special lazer gun and taken away from the field of battle right in the middle of the war.

in other words I like subtle weathering, wish corgi would do a bit more.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

I'm curious how the MB Lightning can be considered better with those inaccurate rockets. To me, that seems like a far more condemnable offense than lifeless turbochargers.

I just recently saw the Bong P-38 at a local hobby shop. I was tempted to ask the owner if he would take my IXO P-38 in trade but figured that would not be that great a difference. Corgi's offering is good, but for the prices I'm seeing retail or on ebay for these - not worth it. I agree with Louie on this one - the model is too simple with no WOW details. As you know, I love to customize my planes and add weathering details, but I'm not willing to spend that much just to do something that Corgi should have done in the first place.

As to my Matchbox Old's P-38, I simply took the "Christmas Tree" rocket racks off. If this model had extended landing gear, it would be a 9.5 out of 10 in my view. This one is not leaving my collection no matter how much it's worth.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Not to agree or disagree with any of the comments above, but in general I prefer a squeaky clean factory finish on my diecast models. I visualize my diecast collection not as miniature replicas of operational aircraft being pushed hard under appalling conditions - rather, as idealized representations of the prototypes at their best. It's all a matter of personal preference, and I can certainly understand those who prefer a weathered look.

The guns do look a little overscale on the Ju-88 for sure!

I agree, you normally don't see aircraft sitting in a museum weathered severely so that's just how I like mine. But I'm sure my opinion is in the minority there

As Harry said, they mounted all different caliber weapons. Look at the size of this gun.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

As we all know the Luftwaffe were excellent at putting together 'field conversions' to suit the needs and requirements of the theatre that they were operating in. The massively upgunned Dorniers, Me-110's, and Ju-88 nightfighters demonstate this along with the weapons fit for the FW-190's used in the ground attack role.

I feel that the front cockpit gun is way out of scale compared to the upper rear MG's. The Ju-88 did mount a 20MM cannon in the front of the gondola on anti shipping strikes. If you compare the twin .50 calibres in the rear turret of the B-25 with the Ju-88's it gives you an idea of scale. Most German aircraft of the early war years mounted 7.92 calibre guns but I think Corgi got this one wrong.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

Most standard 88's carried the 7.7mm MG17 in the front co-pilot position, it should'nt be any larger than the rear guns.

Re: Corgi JU-88 and P-38

The photos show just how oversize the canopy is. When I first saw the Corgi pics of the Ju88 I thought oh dear I hope they put that right before they release them. The gun is a joke. On the 88 there is not the structural strength to fit anything but the standard m/c gun. I really do have a problem with Corgi these days. They must pick up their game and add more fine detail to their models. FOV and Dragon have shown in some of their output just what can be achieved. Sadly, with the exception of the Swordfish, I think Corgi are falling behind and in view of the increased prices I am moving away from them to other makers. Its sad because Corgi can make good models, so come on Corgi surprise us again like you did with the Swordfish.

Afraid not, a picture with no captions from a Russian museum.
