Re: So what's your favourite Gladiator?

I am just waiting for the Wykeham-Barnes Gladiator to come out to complete my collection of Gladiators. Really wish Corgi would make one in Pattle's markings.

. I don't collect British planes - nothing personal guys - just isn't my thing.

nothing tempts you at all?

I have a good cross section of planes from all over the place. I guess if I like the look of a plane then i dont worry where it comes from.

We did occasionally make some cool planes Hot, sure I couldn't change your mind?

Actually Jim, I remember reading a noted aviation author once comment that if you want to see a truly unusual and unattractive plane, look to the British aviation industry. In truth, I like the Spitfire (I've got 4 which pretty satisfies me at the moment), the Firefly, and the Tempest. I did have a SeaFury but again, it wasn't worth the money or the time it took to get rid of it. Whenever you guys get all excited about a new British plane, I find myself wondering what all the fuss is about. I find these planes about as exciting as watching soccer or golf. Again, I'm not knocking your interests, but these planes are not my mine. Yes, a good looking model should interest me, but money is extremely tight and I can't buy everything that comes along. I have to be VERY selective and if there's no emotional connection, then I'm not buying! Luckily Jim, you're here and I know I can count on you to keep the manufacturers in business.

Your sentiment may be fairly common though. My purchasing process is fairly similar to yours. In my case it happens to be allot of the United States aircraft that just do not bring any excitement to the table. Earlier American aircraft are my cup of tea in that I like the Brewster Buffalo, Grumman Wildcat, Vindicator, P-39, early P-38 and the Curtiss Hawk family really spark my interest. Later planes like the P-51, Corsair, and the B-29 leave me yawning and just cannot get a spark of interest in the later aircraft. Just depends on where your interests lay. For some reason I have a real affinity towards the planes that were used during the early stages of the war, and less so as the war progressed. Between the Hawker Hurricane and the Spitfire, I would probably lean towards the Hurricane with its fabric towards the rear (Spitfire is a real peach though). If you were to give me a choice between a Fokker D 21 and a new P-51 or Corsair model, shoot there would be no choice, take the Fokker and its fixed gear in a heart beat. Fortunately the diecast manufacturers have been providing a fairly nice selection lately to help cover most collectors requests.

Talking Re: So what's your favorite Gladiator?

Strange thing that HotTrap, no Brits!!! nothing tempts you at all?

I have a good cross section of planes from all over the place. I guess if I like the look of a plane then i dont worry where it comes from.

Occasionally? How about a lot cool planes, Jim. Granted although warbirds do have a decided utilitarian look about them, there are still some stunning examples about. Before I am 'blasted out of the ether' by our American friends, it would only be correct for me to say that there are many American aircraft too that are stunning examples of design. My personal fave is the B-17. But to say that the Brits don't design cool planes? Wow. I don't know.

HotTrap, I'll admit, it is a bit easier to find cool pre and postwar British civil airliners though, like the Britannia or Comet, but please do consider some of those coldwar V-wing jet bombers from the Vulcan / Victor line. (Mind you, I have to remind myself before I get too wound up, that beauty is still in the eye of the beholder)

Just my 2¢ worth. Pay no heed to my rantings . . .

We agree on the point you make about an emotional attachment for certain planes. There is no point collecting anything that means nothing to you, I understand that.
We all have our passions and favorite planes ,eras etc so stick with what you have a connection with and enjoy them. Heck I have a whole bunch of P40s because as you know they are my passion and I can't move for the little suckers. I even bought FM P40s , how bad is that?
I must say HotTrap since my holiday, money is scarce (So Lorraine tells me, "gulp" how will I explain that B17 I am bidding for on Ebay) so I also have to be very choosy (and sneaky).
I already have 3 Gladiators , Faith Hope and Charity so thats enough for me at the moment although an early silver one would be nice.
But with so many new types coming up including the HM Me110 I am holding off any new purchases for the moment.

Its always the same , so much diecast and so little money.

Just as a matter of interest HotTrap whats your favorite plane .

God Bless America.

Hey jim,
Good luck winning the 17. I'm sure Lorraine will understand. My wife Robin just rolls her eyes and sighs whenever a new box shows up. I figure she understands that there are worst things I could be spending money on. Right? I mean this way she knows where I am during the evening.

As for my favorite plane my avatar says it all. I love the F4U Corsair. It's been my favorite ever since I was a kid and watched the old "Black Sheep Squadron" show on TV. Even read Pappy Boyington's book as a kid. I've got 14 diecast (8 are custom jobs) and will buy more if any are made that I find interesting.

My next favorite is the same as you - the P-40. I've got 10 so far, all in USAAF markings. I wish I could buy them all, but I can't. I'd love an early Tomahawk in the blue/green camo. Waiting for FoV to make one. Being a "Yank", I'm partial to American markings and early WWII birds that fought the Japanese in the early, desperate days of WWII. I enjoy your posts and opinions. A Gladiator may be on my list of future planes to buy. Thank god it's small!

Re: So what's your favourite Gladiator?

I just ordered the Sea Gladiator Mk.I 804 NAS based on this thread. I think it looks great! I never thought I would get into these biplanes from Corgi but you guys are a baaaaad influence on me! I ordered the "Bismarck" Swordfish too. Are they equal in quality and accuracy? Next thing ya know you guys will talk me into a Lysander!

Bought the Finnish Gladiator eventually. Now for the Wykeham-Barnes and Shuttleworth ones!

I'm with you CC, Pattle's plane is a must. How can Corgi not do such a significant pilots' plane? A Gladiator with so many kills?

Re: So what's your favourite Gladiator?

A nice find just popped up on eBay. There is an AA36203 Gloster Sea Gladiator "Charity" up for auction. Item number is 200187263218. Nice Defender of Malta model and would make a nice addition.
