V-1 and V-2 rockets

I would like Corgi to do a Spitfire and V-1 diorama. I've heard the stories of Spitfires "flipping" them off course with their wing tips. Or a V-1 and V-2 set; or a V-2 including launch site.

Yes, that would be very cool. I can't remember if you were around on the old Model hangar - but there was a lively, positive discussion about that very idea. Not sure who originally posted that idea.

I wouldn't be surprised to see corgi do this one.

Re: V-1 and V-2 rockets

I think it would be cool for Corgi to do a diorama with the doodlebug and Spitfire (preferably a MkXIV), similar to the pic below..

Re: V-1 and V-2 rockets

I think the V-1 diorama idea is great. There are plenty of aircraft beside the Spitfire that could be used. How about a Mosquito or Typhoon, maybe even an early version of the Meteor. Don't get me wrong I love Spits but we are getting a little saturated , they are almost as common as silver P-51's.
Lets hope if it happens that they mix it up a little, make the base with a V-1 and say have 500 with Spits, we all know they will sell. Another 500 with Mossies, think they would sell too. Another 500 with Typhoons and another with Meteors. Alas it is probably nothing but a dream .

Thumbs up Re: V-1 and V-2 rockets

I agree, a diorama with spit and V-1 would look great.

I like the idea.......my choice would be a Tiffy & a Meteor.

Am I to assume that Meteor's were actually used this way? I didn't think they were used operationally in WW II.

Re: V-1 and V-2 rockets

At work so don't have my references handy, but my recollection is that Meteors were used to intercept V-1 rockets towards the end of the war. They were also used operationally, IIRC, on a few sweeps over northern Italy but didn't engage any enemy aircraft.

Re:Meteors and V-1s

Meteor Mk1s were used to combat V-1s. They were operated by 616 Sqdn from West Malling in Kent starting Aug 2, 1944. The first kill was on Aug 4, 1944 when F/O Dean downed on at 1000 ft near Dorking. His guns had jammed, so he flipped it over with his wing tip. A second was shot down 24 minutes later by F/O Rogers. By the end of Sept, 616's Meteors had downed 13. The squadron withdrew from ops in December '44 to convert to the new Mk3s and re-located to RAF Colerne, the first permanent Meteor base. A detachment moved to Melsbroek, Belgium in Jan '45, the entire unit eventually relocating to Lubeck where it was disbanded on Aug 29, 1945.

It would take an entire new tooling to produce the early Meteor marks, so I doubt if this combination is possible...a pity.
