Re: "Marge" P-38 supply/demand - Survey

I took a really close look at the scoring (panel lines and seams) on the Bong P-38 and, except for the port & starboard flaps. which are fine in my estimation, the rest of the scoring is right on. The flaps are NOT over done.

I agree the lines are not over done at all. This is really a all-round perfect P-38J IMHO.

Re: "Marge" P-38 supply/demand - Survey

Are you saying that in about 3 months - you think these will be "sold out" on most dealer websites?

If so, for perspectives sake/discussion - in your experience - what other corgi models sold out that quickly? Or in other words what have been the hottest Corgi sellers over the past couple years and how quickly did each "disappear" from dealer websites (or shelves)?

Thanks for the discussion, this is exactly what I was going for when I put up this original question/post. Supply/demand/perspective regarding the specific "Marge" P-38. This type of discussion is fascinating to me.

Thanks again - for all the replies/discussion.

Yes, I am saying this. Dealers can no longer get this item from Corgi and we dealers do not like maintaining inventory. So we are not holding on to huge amounts of this stuff. We order what we have presold and a small amount for the reactionary and walk-in customers, that's it.

WE HATE INVENTORY, IT'S THE DEVIL!

~

I think that this situation is truly different from any in the past in that pre-orders are beginning to consume Corgi's production runs before they ever get here. We've really started to notice this in 2006. When this item was released, I already had two pages of pre-orders for it. Then you have the reactionary surge from the people who waited until it's released, and you're wiped out. Corgi was sold out of this item in five days after the release.

The trend that we're seeing is that there are more and more pre-orders and less post-release purchases. Providing the customers don't back out at the last minute, this is much better for everyone involved. We are able to sell our inventory before we have to pay for it. Your securing your chance of getting it. We can get a better feel for demand and adjust our orders accordingly with Corgi prior to delivery. Plus, Corgi gets the benefit of being able to gauge demand and adjust production to fit. That aspect alone is huge for everyone. Corgi doesn't have to over produce, there's no liquidating of inventory, and their products value is preserved. In a value driven market, the ideal situation is always going to be to supply less than the demand.

Those of you who think that you are going to see this one in a bargain bin or at Tuesday morning, think again. If something sells out from the manufacturer in under a week there isn't any inventory left to liquidate. Inventory liquidation is not a business plan, it's a reaction to a bad one. It also erodes their dealer network by cutting them out of the process. Corgi is making adjustments so look for the outlet-like deals to disappear.

Some of you may not like the strategies that Corgi has perused in the last eighteen months, but they may have done more to preserve this hobby than the rest of the field combined.

mhackl -
Thanks for the industry perspective and the detailed reply. I/we really appreciate what you add to the board.

That just helped me a lot as I make my future Corgi purchase decisions

Re: "Marge" P-38 supply/demand - Survey

I'm not getting this one since I already have the FM/Armour model in 1:48th. Bigger and more bang for the buck.

I won't knock Franklin, I've sold their products for eight years and it's been a good product for us. But...

I would only agree that bigger is better if the size advantage is exploited. The bigger the model is the greater the opportunity is to add detail. I have been really unimpressed with Franklin's willingness to seize upon this opportunity. This is one of the main factors that dove us in to the manufacturing business. As I read Gavin post recently, 1/48th really is the perfect scale. It's the perfect middle ground between 1/72 and 1/32nd & 35th. Plus, from a maufacturing stand point there is a wealth of plastic model resources to aid your research and design process.

Re: "Marge" P-38 supply/demand - Survey

Okay, okay, okay already! I've caved and finally ordered mine today.

Wasn't going to... not that I didn't like the look of the model, I did from the first time I saw her; it's just that I had the Droop Snoot on pre-order. Then all this talk started about how good it looked and along came the pictures and then finally mhackl's insider info that stocks are severely limited for this first issue of Corgi's P-38 .

Sigh... trying to resist temptation in this hobby is like

I was just kidding, I've got like 200 of these things.

No, if you want this one, you better get it now.

Re: "Marge" P-38 supply/demand - Survey

Thanks for the insight mhackl. It's great to hear the dealer side of things. Being an old accounting major, your explination is sound. As for this particular model - it's still a boring plane in my view so not buying one is not something I'm going to lose any sleep over. Now some of the other P-38s like the California Cutie, Pat III and Haleakala are versions I'm interested in.
