Corgi F4U Corsair

I am looking to possibly purchase the Corgi "White 167" Corsair.

I have a "Lerch" Corsair that I picked up from TM, but to be honest, I just do not think it is that great of a plane. I feel my 2 FOV Corsairs are much better looking and the overall quality of the FOV, except for the bland pilot, is much better.

The Lerch Corsair is a History Channel Legends model, and the White 167 Corsair looks to be an Aviation Archive model.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the White 167 model? Is it the same mold as the Legends model or a better mold?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

I bought the early Corgi F4U releases and was very disappointed by their tail wheel configuration for the in-flight display mode. It's awful. Assuming that they haven't changed this, their F4U is OK, providing you plan to display your model wheels down and don't mind the missing pitot tube. Despite their fiddly bits, I prefer the Dragon versions to Corgi's.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

Before someone chimes in that I have "issues" with Corgi, please understand that I have several of their Corsairs so I do have a clue here. Skydriver, the Lerch mold IS the basic Corgi mold. They changed the paint scheme - that's all. I have one Dragon Corsair (White 17 of VF-17) and it's beautiful - fiddly bits and all. I have two FoV Corsairs and while they have issues as well, IMHO they compare nicely to Corgi's model. The landing gear on the Corgi model is very robust and clunky. The Dragon and FoV gear looks more realistic. Also Dragon's paint color is closer to the "Sea Blue" used in WWII rather than Corgi's high gloss dark blue which they use for all their versions. But if you can get it for a good price, a Corgi Corsair will not "cheapen" or insult your collection. I personally like my "Steib" Legends version very much. It's rare, but you can still find it - I think.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

The White 167 is one of my favorite Corgi Corsairs:

I like the weathering and I'm a Corsair nut...

That said, I don't care for the VERY deep panel lines very much and overall I do prefer Dragon's Corsairs... I just really wish someone would make a nice one in 1:48 (I don't care for FM's).

I don't think you'd regret picking up 167 -- it, and Pappy's ride, are my two favorite Corgi Corsairs.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

I agree these Corsair aren't that bad at all...I'm a Corsair fan as well and the 167 is pretty good one to have...I have a Boyington one too and it's my favorite.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

I have the Corgi "Marines Dream" birdcage Corsair and it is a decent piece.. It is the only other Corsair I have next to FOVs version, which is pretty nice for the price..

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

Thanks for the input. Based on your comments, I went ahead and placed a bid. Hopefully I will be lucky.

Like hworth18, I have the "Marines Dream" and really like it. I am just hoping this is as good a plane as that one.

Thumbs up Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

Late to the party, as usual, but I just got the bird this month, for under $13.00, and I like the looks of it. Not perfect of course, but then what is in the die cast world? It'll make a nice addition to your collection.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

Well I won my bid on ebay. $9.99 and with shipping it came to $16.49. I think that is a great deal.I can't wait to get my new Corsair.

Re: Corgi F4U Corsair

I think Corgi could have done better but that said I admittadly have 3 Corgi Corsairs and really think the compliment my collection
I have the Legends Strieg white 3 fabulous reminds me of 1970's show "Baa Baa Black Sheep"
I also have the Corsair from the 2 piece Guadalcanal set white 20 has nice weathering and a really cool looking "bird cage "
Lastly I have the nicely weathered white 167 seems to be very popular I think it epitomizes Corsairs.
