Question Corgi polished metal finishes...

Hey all! Having just moved and in dealing with the packing and un-packing of the collection I have noticed that some/many of my polished metal finish models have developed a bit of a "film" or "splotchy" area on the surface.
I attempted to polish it off w/ a soft rag and then a jewelers polish cloth to no apparent effect.
It is not a horrible finish issue, and I am also unclear if this may be some sort of breakdown of any "clear coat" which Corgi may (or may not) apply to the models.
I am wondering if this is some odd oxidation reaction or something??? Or should I go with Al Gore and blame Global Warming?
Has anyone else had this problem? And how do you maintain the finish on these models?

Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

I just looked at my P-47 and it has done the same thing. Maybe it's a "self-weathering" feature.

I wish he had not said anything about it....Now my Cripes A Mighty is the same way...."self weathering" good one.
I might try my wife's cleaner she uses on her brass State spoon collections.

Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

I looked at mine, but just through the glass cabinet, did not notice a problem. If I can't see a problem, there IS no problem, right?!

Nice thinking Capt. I like your style.

Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

I've got "Mrs Bonnie" P51. It's never been out of the box and is showing signs of tarnish on both the aircraft and the nose art pannel.

Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

Be very careful with what you use and the towel/ rag you use, I have tried a couple of ways using the nose art plate from "Mrs. Bonnie", and have had problems with the "decals" fading/rubbing off. I have used "mild soap, computer wipes, windex, even mag rim cleaner ( getting desperate then.) . The one thing i did learn is to use cheese cloth to wipe with. So far nothing has really worked.

Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

I had both the "Cripes A'Mighty" and "Bunnie" and got tired of the way the tarnish, once started, could not be stopped, removed or eliminated. I sold them both and will not buy another plane finished in this manner because they are such a pain to care for.

Unhappy Re: Corgi polished metal finishes...

Guys, sorry to say but I don't think any amount of polishing is going to solve the problem which is in the metal beneath the clearcoat. I've seen the very same issue in a past career where a product with clearcoat over polished metal tarnished within a year of production. The issue is the porosity of the clear varnish allowing air through to oxidize the metal. Short of stripping off the clear coat I don't think there's anything that can be done I'm afraid. I've got a few Mustangs that are going grey....
