| I am thinking about adding a He-111 to my collection of Med/Africa planes and have looked at both the Sardinia and Libyan versions of the plane. Of the two, which would most of you consider to be the most accurate? ![]() I read the thread about the Sardinia paint scheme (which I admit isn't my favorite, however, the pics posted by Ships1250 make it look much better than what's on the Tricatus site). How does the Libyan version stand up to scrutiny? ![]() Along those lines, I would also like to add a B-17 that isn't a G model to my collection. The Memphis Belle comes to mind but it is hard to find and relatively expensive. Yankee Doodle is next up, but I get the impression it is to the B-17 models what the Sardinian model is to He-111s. Why isn't this one liked very much? The camo is odd, but I've seen early war pics with planes in that pattern. Any thoughts on this? ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? I am not sure. THe Belle would be the best to get. Besides that I would say Yankee. Yankee is a very historic aircraft. I am not sure why some do not like it. | |||||||||||||

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? Memphis Belle is the best B-17F on the market for 1:72nd. The Yankee is a nice looking B-17F like mustangdriver was saying not sure why others don't like it. Maybe the paint scheme is off a little ??.I saw the Yankee B-17 for the first time on tv the other night in black & white and it did look a little different then the other B-17's i saw on there. | I have "Sweet & Lovely" and I love it (sorry, couldn't resist). When I bought it I had the option of buying "Memphis Belle" but I opted for S&L. It's well done, no huge gaps or seams to contend with, and it makes a fine addition to my USAAF flight line. | |||||||||||||

I have the Sardinia HE-111 and it looks much better out of the box than it does in pictures. I found it at Tuesday Morning and for $30.00 I consider it a great find.

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? I've got B-17 E/F Yankee, Mamphis Belle and Miss Minookie (8th AF set). I like them all but if I had to recommend only one, it would not be Yankee. I like this version a lot, but it's not a typical USAAF plane. The camouflage patern is RAF (in fact it was destined for the RAF but when the US entered the war it was put into US service). The Belle and Minookie B-17's are in 'normal' USAAF colors. The Belle is the best looking...but Minookie is easy to find and relatively cheap (perfect as first B-17 imho). | |||||||||||||

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? I love both the sardinia H111 and yankee doodle. Yankee doodle because it has no guns under the chin. Sardinia becaus I love the camo. I find the other desert H111 is a bit too plain for my taste. | |||||||||||||

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? I've always thought there was something wrong with the canopy windows on Yankee Doodle, they look too small. I like Yankee Doodle overall but I thoght that for $100.00 when new they could have at least but the correct nose piece on it. | |||||||||||||

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts?
Generalising, I'd say that both He.111's look O.K. to me. You've pretty much answered your own questions on the Yankee Doodle B.17. FWIW, Miss Minookie would be my choice of the 3 x available B.17 F 's.... Memphis Belle's a great a/c, but with respect to the great Robert Morgan & Co - due to latterday overexposure it's a subject that's been hacked to death, like Bader's 'D*B' ; Anderson's Old Crow, or Bush (senior's) T.B.M ' 'X2 '........fine for people who are just getting into the subject - but long in the tooth for folks who've been studying/following W.W.2 types for many years, who grow tired of scheme replication after replication ("now let me guess, you've bought a model P.51 & you want to paint it up as 'Old Crow', how different"... NOT). If you went out & purchased EVERY available metal model & plastic kit ever made, of (say), Anderson's 'Old Crow' you'd need a fair sized storage area, just for the 25 - 45 replica's in various scales that have carried 'Old Crow's colours alone. Miss Minookie AIN'T a 'worn out' subject, wears typical 8th A.F. scheme & has that lovely White 'Air Division'/'Bomb Group' ident' Triangle, that was so typical of all B.17's based in East Anglia during the 8th's E.T.O. bombing campaign. Shame it's in a set & not available seperately

| Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts? I really appreciate everyone's input on this and hope to read more - both for the opinions that are offerred and for some interesting commentary. Thank you all. In regard to the He-111's, I feel a little more open now to purchasing the Sardinia version (even with it's yellow torpedos - they didn't really come that color did they? ). Otherwise, I would have probably settled for the plain Libyan version (but it occurs to me that a Ju-88 in that scheme is due out next year - if you can afford it). I think cost would be the deciding factor at this point and both are quite affordable. Thanks again everyone who took the time to post. My thoughts, such as they are, on the B-17's in another reply... | |||||||||||||
