Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts?

Because Hornchurch brought something up which has occurred to me (and I have mentioned as much to PappyB in a past conversation), I'll respond to comments about the B-17's.

Roofie: Thanks for reminding me that the camo is originally for the RAF but we repo'd the plane when the war started. I have a G model with the standard paint job (I believe) on my 2nd Patches. That being the case a non-standard might be a welcome addition.

Stalag: I forgot about the S&L (I haven't seen that one for a long time). Another one to consider.

Tater7: I thought the same thing about the cockpit windows. When you look at it on Tricatus and compare it with another 17 with the same angle they ook smaller. An illusion?

Miss Minookie is mentioned a few times and sounds like a good model if the set presents itself at a good price.

To be honest, Memphis Belle is a wonderful model with an amazing history. But I share some of the same feeling expressed by Hornchurch in that it is so well known it has become an icon of sorts, and for that reason I almost don't want to add it to my collection. That being said, I am not so jaded as to pass it by should price and opportunity present itself. But I had said almost the same thing to PappyB one day when we were talking about some of the models that were available. I want to be absolutely clear that I am happy for anyone that has had the good fortune of adding a MB to their collection - I certainly would have had I seen them at TM not so long ago for $29.00!

So I would have to say that my initial reaction would be to try to obtain one of the other planes to have a non-G model B-17. But if a MB just happened to come my way, at a price I couldn't refuse, well , I would gladly make room for it on the shelf.

Again, my sincere thanks to everyone who has posted in this thread. It has been a big help and very informative.

Memphis Belle's a great a/c, but with respect to the great Robert Morgan & Co - due to latterday overexposure it's a subject that's been hacked to death...

Re: B-17 and He-111 thoughts?

I am thinking about adding a He-111 to my collection of Med/Africa planes and have looked at both the Sardinia and Libyan versions of the plane. Of the two, which would most of you consider to be the most accurate?

I read the thread about the Sardinia paint scheme (which I admit isn't my favorite, however, the pics posted by Ships1250 make it look much better than what's on the Tricatus site). How does the Libyan version stand up to scrutiny?

I have the Libya He-111 and I really like it.

I have the 8th AF set and I think Miss Minookie is a real beauty! Initially I wanted a 'G' but after getting a good deal on the set and had a good look at the plane, appreciated the cleaner lines of the earlier B17s. I'd recommend her.
