Custom Corgi Warbirds F4U Corsair

Have to say that at first I was really put off by these "baby" Corgis. But after buying a couple, I've got to admit that they aren't that bad. For customizing, they are down right excellent base pieces especially if you can pick them up for under $10.00 like I did with this one.

Review
Pros:This is the basic Corgi Corsair which means it is very well done. The model has weight which is great. Overall dimensions are excellent and I love the attention to small detail in the basic mold like the actuators for the trim tabs and square hole in the starboard flap for pilot to climb up. A detailed engine and that large Hamilton Standard prop are pluses. The Aviation Archive stand is equally good to have.

Cons: Like all Warbirds, markings are bare bones - national insignia & plane number. Engine is blue like the rest of the molded cowling and should be painted. Cockpit is the molded floor and seat - all blue, no pilot or instrument panel. Looks cheap and could be improved with a pilot. Not sure if these markings go with this version of the plane. Thought Walsh flew a "birdcage" Corsair, which is the version these markings and coloration are consistent for. Landing gear up is okay, but I like mine down, but I can live with it.

Model: 1/72 F4U-1D flown by Lt. Jg Ira Kepford
Paint: Model Master Dark Sea Blue (FS15042), Model Master Intermediate Blue (FS35164), Testor Flat White 1168, Testor Dullcote spray

Decals: Eagle Strike Productions #72013 (ordered from Squadron)

Notes: Painted engine silver. Painted inside of canopy black. In retrospect, should have used a light blue. Used a 1/8 wide artist brush to paint plane, fine tipped brush for details. Paint ratio was 3 parts paint to one part thinner. Added radio wires.

Re: Custom Corgi Warbirds F4U Corsair

What's with the black canopy? How come you would paint it? Is there a legit reason it/all shouldn't be clear?

Personal preference. I absolutely hate empty cockpits with no pilots in a flying plane model. Besides, I wasn't going to risk damaging an expensive AA or Legends model by ripping up a canopy and scrounging a pilot just to spruce up a Warbirds plane. I have noticed that wooden desk models have the cockpits painted black or skyblue. I was looking for the same feel.

I think it's a good way to display pilotless "flying" aircraft....

I like it ...Looks like a battle scarred Kepford Corsair and a JOLLY ROGER too.
Great job HotTtrap.
