Re: Favorite Lancaster

I love it. You are making me want this model even more. That is my favorite Lanc hands down.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Favorite Lancaster

.........

You should check out this seriously impressive Royal Air Force website link, about R.5868 - S for Sugar.

http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafwaddington/r5868.html

It gives a day by day (or should that read Night by Night !) account of
EVERYTHING that amazing Lancaster went through.... till 137th mission.

Detailed accounts of each mission - and some of their consequences
(i.e. the 26th Nov '43 mission - bent wing/Ground loop)......
Even tells you about repeated attacks by Ju 88's - Me 110's & F.W. 190's........& how she survived against the odds.

Even tells of her post-war tales, through the '50's, 60's & '70's

(There are also original wartime pictures of her).

Read the Page...... & tell me you're not seriously impressed ?

MustangDriver - Glad you found it highly interesting & informative, (as I hope everyone else who's interested in the Avro Lancaster, does).

Even I was suprised just how comprehensive it was.

The R.A.F. base (Waddington, where she flew from), is still highly active today, & is used by another (modern-ish) famous aircraft type, that is available in Corgi Die-cast...... (with 'mushroom' dish !).
the Boeing E.3 (Sentry) A.W.A.C.S. - used by No 8 Sqdn.

B.T.W. the Lanc' - S for Sugar - in the R.A.F. Museum, IS THE ORIGINAL & GENUINE aircraft, however, it was later discovered AFTER she had been earmarked for preservation, that she was mistaken as the top scoring/missions flown - Lancaster (only 137 !).

That honour fell to a 103 Sqdn B.111 - 'Mike Squared', PM-M2, so called because that Squadron had TWO Lancasters on strength that both carried the Sqdn Codes PM-M.

PM-M2 (Serial no ED 888) was scrapped shortly after war's end (despite being top-scorer, with 140 missions completed) - due to an oversight by one of the stupid pen-pushers at Whitehall in London.
Ironic, as by all accounts, she was an absolute pig to fly (according to her air & ground crews, despite her survivability rate).

Yeah, I was amazed to see the combat photos on the site. I love the fact that they put up the quote on the nose.

Question Re: Favorite Lancaster

What do you guys think of the No. 419 Sqn RCAF VR-A (AA32605) dorsal turrent with its twin .50s? I didn't like that turrent (or the price) on VR-A which is partly why I took KM-B.

Sorry for the belated reply ZS-VAN.........

In answer to your question - I agree, that mid-upper turret does look pretty naff - even if it was aerodynamic........ & more importantly - Central to the story of Andrew Mynarski V.C..... (THE actual mid-upper gunner himself) - and the reason why Corgi - & the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum - chose to paint only the World's Second Airworthy/Flying Lancaster, up as VR*A.

I've known about the Mynarski Lanc' since I was a kid, & there was an in depth article about it in 'Speed & Power' magazine in the mid-'seventies.

But like you, when the chance came up a few years ago, to get the VR*A Lancaster 'on the cheap' (£ 40 - when they were £ 90, in the shops), I (co-incidentally) like you - opted for the 44 Sqdn/Nettleton/Augsberg Raid, Lancaster KM*B - which I also picked up for £ 40, at a die-cast fair in the 'Corn Exchange' King's Lynn - as I preferred the 'Normal-Look/outline', coupled with the Early War, 1942 type A.1 fuselage roundel

Blimey, I was so impressed - that I went on to buy another 3 Lanc's thereafter.....(Pathfinder/Dambuster & RCAF.air-sea rescue).

I can honestly say that I STILL regard Corgi's 1/72 Lancaster, to be their best-ever mould ! (though that Swordfish looks sharp).

Re: Favorite Lancaster ZS VAN

Pictures of S-Sugar at Hendon as promised. These must be two or three years old.

Yo, ZS-VAN; Just been trawling through the Corgi's on U.K. E-bay & came across a Lanc' I fancy - then I saw the price, & after that, the highest bidder...... YOU !!!

There's still 4 hours & 45 mins left, so good luck with your bidding !!!!

It frightens me that the Lanc's that have been out for some time now, are still commanding so much money - especially bearing in mind, that this particular one is an 'unlimited' version (number-wise).
