| Re: Corgi 2007 Releases: Falklands 25th Anniversary The Harrier diorama fits perfectly with my collecting goals. March date? Better save some money. I'll have to hunt down a Sea Harrier to go along with it. The HMS Antrim Wessex is tempting too. | |||||||||||||

USA AA39901 NEW! HMS Hermes Diorama BAE Sea Harrier FRS.MK.I – ZA174, 801 Squadron, FAA BAE Harrier GR3 – XW767, NO. 1 Squadron RAF First Quarter 2007 In time of war, the Harrier was to be deployed away from established airfields which were vulnerable to attack. Instead, it was to be operated from short, rough strips of ground and hidden in camouflaged “hides,” from which it would attack the enemy’s approaching armored formations. These qualities came into their own during the Falklands War. RAF Harriers were deployed to the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Hermes as part of the task force sent to recapture the Falkland Islands. The Harrier GR3 performed attack sorties from the aircraft carrier, and later from basic landing strips on the islands, often in conditions that would have grounded conventional aircraft.

USA AA37602 NEW! Westland Wessex HAS.3 XP142 “Humphrey,” Royal Navy, HMS Antrim, South Atlantic, 1982 (As preserved in the Fleet Air Arm Musuem, Yeovilton, Somerset) Second Quarter 2007 Humphrey was a Wessex HAS 3 (XP142 AN/406) based on HMS Antrim with 100 Flight of 737 NAS. It was used to rescue the crew and (SAS) passengers of 2 Wessex HU 5 (XT464 and XT473) that crashed on South Georgia during Operation Paraquat, the British operation to retake the island in late April 1982. Humphrey also did some Special Ops insertions, rescued a number of SBS/SAS personnel whose outboard motors had failed on their inflatable boats, plus depth charged the Argentinean submarine Santa Fe. It was damaged by cannon splinters when Antrim was attacked by Argentinean Air Force Dagger fighter bombers on May 21, 1982, while the ship was in Falkland Sound. The helicopter was due to be retired in July 1982 anyway; hence it went to the FAA Museum when Antrim returned to the UK.

Vickers VC-10 C.MK.1 NO. 10 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, Oxon, Falklands “CASEVAC” Flights, 1982 First Quarter 2007 The C1 was a variant of the civil “Standard VC-10” fitted with the wing and more powerful engines of the “Super VC-10.” The C1 can carry 139 passengers in rear-facing seats, eight standard pallets or up to 78 medical evacuation stretchers. The strengthened floor allowed the C1 to transport 1,000-lb. bombs for the Tornado GR1 force during the Gulf War, each aircraft carrying 50 per flight. During the war, No. 10 Sq. flew 1,326 sorties in over 5,000 hours. The squadron also took part in most other operations involving British forces, including the 1982 Falklands War and the 2003 war in Iraq.
