DML 1/72 YF-23 work in progress

Dragon's 1/72 kit. I'm building the first prototype for myself and I'm building the second prototype as a commissioned build for a friend.

Just about 90% done. It came out ok, I guess, but I'm still disappointed 'cause it didn't come out as I had hoped. Some silvering, on a few of the decals, and I filtered the weathering down too much on the fuselage bottom. Also had a bit of primer bleed under the canopy mask. The commissioned build should turn out quite a bit better.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Thumbs up Re: DML 1/72 YF-23 work in progress

Super nice. My brothers favorite plane. Supposedly the Air Force Museum is fixing up one of the prototypes for display.

Re: DML 1/72 YF-23 work in progress

Plenty of folks (knowledgeable folks) still think the YF-23 should have won over the YF-22. Sure beats the '22 for looks, anyway.

Terrific looking model there, Skid!

Looks like a truly professional job. My problem with many of the modern U.S. and European fighters is their drab gray, low visibility schemes and markings. That's one reason I favor WWII and early Cold War warbirds---they really jump out and grab you.

Great work on the decals, too!

Re: DML 1/72 YF-23 work in progress

I like this a lot.

Excellent work.

Is there a rough release date for this kit if it comes into production?

Unfortunately, the kit has been out of production for quite some time. IIRC, it was released in 1996. They're available on ebay from time to time. Here are some pics of the one I'm building on commision. It's the second prototype...

The exhaust nozzles, of the real plane, are surrounded by tiles that hide the engines' heat signature. The DML kit doesn't have the tile detail so I partially reworked that area of the kit.

The real plane's nozzle detail...

The unmodified nozzles on the first kit that I built for myself...

The reworked nozzles on the commisioned build...
