How Many Diecast Warbird Molds Are Represented In Your Collection?

I tallied up my diecast warbird collection recently, using a different standard than I usually employ. Instead of adding up all of the models I have acquired, including duplicates, triplicates, etc, I counted only the number of different molds that were represented by models on my shelves or held in reserve. For example, a ME-262A by Corgi, IXO and Dragon in 1:72nd scale, counts as three separate molds. If you also have an Armour version of the ME-262A in 1:48th scale, that's a fourth mold. In a similar vein, I counted each variant of a plane---a Spitfire MK I, MK Vb, MK VC, MK IX, etc. as separate molds for each manufacturer.

Using this method of compiling, I was surprised to find that I had 350 different molds in my collection of diecast warbirds, starting with a few from the 1930s era and going forward. These broke down by scale as follows:

1) 1:72nd: 184 ( 53% )
2) 1:100: 54 ( 15% )
3) 1:144: 42 ( 12% )
4) 1:48: 21 ( 6% )
5) Various others: 49 ( 14% )*

* Many of these are Model Power creations in the odd scales preferred by this company.

I'm not expecting everyone to rush to their cabinets, shelves or "bins" to replicate my analysis----certainly not on July 4th, anyway. Just thought I'd pass along the findings. If you count Atlas, IXO, Altaya, GE Fabbri/Italeri and Model Power, as well as the diecast biggies, a lot more warbird molds have been commissioned in the past 15 years than I realized.

1/32- 3 molds
1/35- 2 molds
1/48- 4 molds
1/72- 12 molds
1/100- 2 molds

That's what's accounted for.

Only Armour 1/48th scale (primarily F-4's & F-86's), some SpecCast 1/48th scale (mostly F-86 Sabres), some Ertl 1/48th scale odds & ends, and a few Corgi 1/100th scales. Everything else is plastic. - JY

Re: How Many Diecast Warbird Molds Are Represented In Your Collection?

Hmm... let's see.

1:72 molds - 78

1:48 molds - 3

1:144 molds - 2

1:400 molds - 1

I don't count my Easy Model warbirds on account of their slight lack of metal content
