New Cabinet + some new planes

I'm a modest collector and have been focusing on 1/32...but will likely start in with 1/48. Recently acquired the GMP Texas Longhorn and Kittyhawk, as well as the Hurricane and Mosquito.

The Norden display cabinet from Ikea is quite good, and adding the lights is not hard at all. Some simple pics, but even my wife likes the collection

Great little display there! Despite being mainlya 32nd collector, I see you broke down and got one of the finest Stringbags ever created. Well done!

Don't forget the targets are my airfields, Leigh-Mallory, and you're not getting fifty, you're not even getting ten.

FS, Sounds like a plan. I personally use the Detolf model for its capacity and modificacation factors, than the more formal approach of a furniture type display. 'Nice collection you got there'.

That is a beautiful display case FlyingScot and I like how you have dispersed the models in the case.

However, since it is a Norden case aren't you required to display heavy bombers?

Nice looking pair of P-40s you have in the cabinet!

Re: New Cabinet + some new planes

Thanks, relatively new to expanding the collection - can be hard on the wallet but a lot of fun. Yep, with "Norden" as the name would like to find some good "heavies"..but haven't found a 24 or 17 yet that I really like. Corgi's have an ugly join line in the noise on the 17, and the only 24 I like is the Strawberry Bitch...and that is either impossible to find or too much pain in the wallet. As for P-40s, really like the GMP just wish they'd done a P40B from Pearl.

I do have a Halifax coming, as well as a B-25. Think a couple of 52s (Diamond and NB-52 (X-15) are in my future too.

Funny thing is, Corsair's, 47s, 38s and Marauder are my favorite aircraft...and as such I haven't found any models I really like that match the look / quality I'm looking for. Need to give it some more time...not really scale conscious, but would like to focus on 1:48..but there are some fantastic 1:72 in other aircraft models too.

One of the threads on the board talked about how hard it is to find a good P-51 representation, and having a Corgi and GMP to compare, gotta agree they both have flaws. Corgi really cut corners (prop is cheap flimsy plastic, canopy is lousy, something seems "off") and GMP is not quite right (hinges, proportion wrong), but has some nice features / details. Feel that way about those other aircraft, but give it some time and there is hope. If the HM F3F is as good it *appears* - maybe they'll pick up the loose ends and do all these planes justice....

I'm just surprised how hard it is to find a good model of such popular and historic aircraft...if only someone would pay attention to the same level of detail, accuracy and quality as say...the Corgi Swordfish. If anyone has suggestions - please let me know (not an FM fan...). Great board and site!

Re: New Cabinet + some new planes

Just my opinion but I don't think anyone's going to come along and do a better job with the heavies...would be great to see Corgi and FM get some competition though. But i admire your restrait, I could use some of that (surprised I could even spell it.. wait, oops: restraint )

And FM's marketing might might keep others away from doing the mainstream stuff (P-51D, P-47C/D, Corsair, P-38).
