Earthquake proof the collection

Well,

Living in California, one has to plan for earthquakes.

So, what do you use to keep your models from sliding off display shelfs. Barring the big one, where nothing will help.

Do you make little wheel chocks out of QuakeHold putty?

Any other ideas?

Re: Earthquake proof the collection

Well it not just California anymore. We had a 5.4 on the richter scale yesterday at 4:36 Am with 8 after shocks during the day..

It woke my ass up out of bed in a hurry with the house shaking! We felt the aftershocks in the plant where I work..

Re: Earthquake proof the collection

We only get the occasional little tremor up here, just enough to make you wonder if you had just had an earthquake or brainfart. No need for special precautions.

Re: Earthquake proof the collection

edkao - I've got earthquake straps securing all of my cabinets to the wall. Most of them have doors to keep the contents in but since they don't latch I have sturdy elastic bands lashing the door knobs together. Keeps my 3 year old out too! For some of the larger models out on shelves I use some quake putty under the stands. I think as long as we don't get anything over a 7.0 I'm safe!!

Re: Earthquake proof the collection

I've got the same set-up as no4mkit: cabinet strapped to the wall, glass doors held closed with a plastic childproof lock. Unlike no4mkit, I think my models are goners with anything over about 6.0. On the plus side, I have about 1/3 of my collection boxed at any time, so I won't have to rebuild my collection completely from scratch.

Re: Earthquake proof the collection

Here is a quick and dirty shot of some of my displays. No cabinets to strap to the wall. I guess i have to start applying putty to the planes.
