Was This The Best Fighter Plane Of WW II?

At high altitudes the TA-152 was a hard bird to catch---even by P-51s or Tempest Vs.

Re: Was This The Best Fighter Plane Of WW II?

The debate is on! I have read some interesting articles on the TA 152 series of aircraft and really like the H model. Duel in the Sky by Captain Eric M. Brown gives some neat rack and stack information of the top performing aircraft of WWII.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Best what, high altitude interceptor? Best fighter for defense of the Reich? Definitely not best overall fighter of WW II. "Fighter" covers a lot of missions. Jack of all trades, master at none comes to mind every time the discussion of the best fighter of WW II gets going.

I have come across an article that indicated that the TA 152H also performed well at low altitudes also. Wonder if all that wing area enhanced its maneuverability.

That and the engine's power versus altitude performance. Recall, the MiG-3 with a high-altitude optimized engine was a bit of a porker down low. The P-47 was a high altitude fighter with that big turbo-supercharger but lacking down low until the paddle-bladed prop and injection system.

It has always been a favourite of mine, .... one of the few German WWII aircraft I built back in the day.

It did have a neat lean look to it.
