One, shudders to think what would have happened if Der Fuhrer's mind had cleared enough to allow some semblance of common sense to prevail in the spring of 1941. Say, instead of invading Russia and, six months later, declaring war on the US, Hitler had given Rommel 10 additional divisions, which could have easily been spared, and allowed him to conquer Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Add to this an invasion of Malta and Gibraltar, which was also feasible, and Germany gets all of the oil it needs and wins the war---even if the the country's aircraft production plans are a chaotic shambles and its most gifted designers are out of control egotists. The civilized world is fortunate, indeed, that Hitler was such an irrational leader. | Here is another what if. What if Walter Weaver had not died and Germany had actually gone with his Ural Bomber concept? |
