Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

I have assembled some of my 1/48 diecast WW1 model fighters for you to see.
The cream Spad is Guynemere's and is made by Hallmark metal body plastic wings not bad
The Nieuport 11 is Barracca's made by Carousel 1 perfect in every detail literally
The 2 camo Spads are made by Matchbox and have metal bodies one is Frank Lukes the other is Eddie Rickenbackers (red cowling) I took closeups to show you the magnificent detail on these no rigging but who cares when you see the exhaustand engine detail among other things.
The all green Fokker Dr1 is Matchbox's version of Udet's. Love it, but it was soon eclipsed and doomed to the closet when I got the C1 version.
The striped Dr.1 is Voss's and made by Carousel of course. Hallmark did the same one but not nearly as good and a wee bit over-scaled.
The red triplane is unmistakeably Carousel 1 and a sight to behold. I hope Corgi's Albatross can sit next to it without looking cheap.
Most of you recognize the Corgi Se5A by now it is Billy Bishops. It is all metal and needs detailing out of the box IMHO to get it up to speed with the others.
I have all of the Model Power bi-planes but I am now focused entirely on 1/48 and will give those to my son later for his sandbox and birthday cakes.
The Matchbox Spads will be tough for Corgi to beat even with screw holes and lack of rigging. Enjoy the pics brothers....

Re: Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

You definitely have a nice looking WWI collection. All you seem to need is someone to put out some more WWI models. It is a shame Matchbox quit putting out diecast aircraft.

Re: Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

Louie, does ANYONE do a 'Nungesser' WW.I a/c ????????

Always "spooked me" as a youngster, watching actual film, of that 'thing' try & cross the Atalantic the wrong way, which led to his death !!!!!

Ironic & macabre, that 'motif' on the side of his plane (the Candlestick/Heart/Coffin combination)

Still makes me shudder !!!!!!!!!!

When did he start "using" that motif/design on his planes.........? any Ideas ?

Re: Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

Thank you sir. The one thing I need to do soon is to put some dullcoat to that Se5A. I hate the shine it looks a little over the top. Great model though. You guys may notice that the Carousel Dr1's (2 of them) have pilots. These are the best made and I stole them from the 2 Matchbox Dr.1's I have stored. They really comliment the Carousel Dr's. My coollection is just begging for a Nieuport 17, Sopwith Camels and of course the mother of all bi-planes, the Fokker DVII. i begged Frank to make some. He is VERY tight lipped about whatever he will release. Can't say I blame him though.

Very nice, Louie! You are right, those Matchbox SPADS are nice. I hope Corgi's is close. Don't you have the C1 Prince Nieuport 11?

Re: Nungessers Nieuport 17

I must have that one some day. It is the finest livery of them all IMO. No, it is not in metal yet although Frank and I discussed this plane and he sounded as if he will do it. He also suggested using Rawlings Flyboys 17 and converting it since it has almost all the same markings. I have not looked in to this but will consider it since there are a gazillion of those available for a good price. I am intrigued by the story you tell and I will read up on that. Does sound rather macabre.

Re: Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

I passed on the Norman Prince balloon busting rocket plane. I could not get over those big primative missiles. Reminded me of the roadrunner cartoon. just need to strap one on coyote with his goggles and roller skates. The model itself is fantastic. all C1's are IMHO..

After I put out my post on 'Nungesser', I decided to do a 'Google'-search, to find out more.........

AAAaaargh, this Man was as "Hard as Iron" - makes 'Rambo' & 'Steven-Segal' look positively 'wimpish' !!!!!!!

Apparently so heavily wounded, multiple times - so bad, he had to be CARRIED to & from his plane !!!!!!!!!????!!!!!!!!!

Talk about resilient - don't think I've ever come across a more determined individual.........

The links make FASCINATING reading........

Nungesser

CHARLES NUNGESSER

The medical condition & injuries (yet he continues) = amazing !

Also, there are entries in Wikipedia & 'Angelfire' that vary slightly

One HARD Airman = I'm stunned !!!!!!!!

Re: Louie's World War 1 Collection Pics

Wonderful collection Louie! WW I has so many model possibilities I'm surprised there isn't more interest. I am expanding my collection into this era's airplanes and will be supporting both the Carousel 1 and Corgi's efforts.

I hope the Flyboys experience hasn't put C1 off of new Nieuport 17 liveries. There are so many good subjects. Nungesser's N1895 would be a perfect first issue. Ball's A.213, Guynemer's N.1531 and Lufbery's N.1844 are also high on my list.
