DiecastAce Field Back in Biz...

Finally getting a bit settled in the new house -- and as I posted before about the travails associated with moving a collection with a volume that surprised even me (I swear these models reproduce like bunnies or something ) I thought I'd post some pics of how the display's coming along in the new, smaller office. (Still a pretty good size though, so I'm counting my blessings -- and teh cooler climate means I can store models and boxes in the attic without fear of them melting...)

I still need to pick up a Detolf for the large scale models (1:35-1:32) and I think I'll have to pony up the dough for a cover for the GMP diorama too, even though $60 for a class cover hurts... the dust is already attacking!

My wife says I should thin out the displays and that she thinks I'm over-doing it... I say there's still room for a couple shelves (and that detolf) and that I'm not crowding the cabinets I have too much right now. What do you guys say?

This is your standard Ikea Billy bookcase with some glass shelves added (available at Ikea) and glass doors -- I really like these for 1:72 and 1:48 fighters -- heavies won't fit though. Be cool if a deeper version of this was available...
I've got 79 models in there right now I think. With room for more, if i really want to crowd it... The b-ball is signed by Mr. Larry Bird himself (won it in the 80's at a McDonalds!)

I like to show the scale of the B-52 by pairing it with another 1:144 model...

A very loose take on a BOB furball up top, "parked" planes that high look a bit silly to me... followed by a shelf for the Luftwaffe.

Then a shelf for the Allies, and a half for the Pacific Theater (allied) -- and a half shelf for Korea and Vietnam...

Then the modern stuff... I've got Dragon and CW birds on Witty stands, which work well.

Two more shelves of fast movers... wish I could have two cabinets, one for modern jets, and one for props, but that would probably be over-doing it!

The last two shelves are 1:48 -- tried to arrange by theater/adversaries...

My one and only aviation print -- Sting of the Yellow Jackets by Robert Bailey. I really like this as it really captures the story of the airwar over Europe in a single composition... I'd like to add Robert Taylors Gunfight Over Rabaul someday...

The only two speccasts out on display... I'd like to add a shelf or two to the room for all my Speccast Corsairs as I still like them.. The Raider is a 1/1 by an vet artist in Colorado that I received as a gift.

The "bookcase" with just one free shelf for books.... which I'll fill with my aviation reads as I unpack 'em... The MOM set is on top simply as I don't know what to do with it right now (I may put a small shelf up just to hold the box as I like the art, adn I'll put the models in the Detolf).

I don't like to mix scales but I think it works alright... and one shelf for 1:48 Vietnam birds -- got a MiG coming to give them something to chase.

Suprisingly I have more Libs than Forts... they may be ugly but for some reason I'm drawn to 'em.

These are models I pulled out of the Billy per my wife's recommendations against over-crowding... I don't think this is what she had in mind either!

I have a twin monitor display with my PC with an aviation themed screensaver... such as WWII era pinups.. which the wife is okay with even.

Last but not least is the lone GMP I have out -- eventually I see this going on top of the detolf with a glass cover as the base is the same dimensions as the detolf, I think...

Thanks all folks!

So, am I over-doing it? The room is roughly 12x12...

Hey Pappy! I'll trade you a GMP "Preddy" Mustang canopy with a nice crack in it (no doubt caused by a C1 Bf-109 cannon shell). It would give your Mustang a nice air-battle look rather than as a Hanger-Queen. I won't mind and only offer it to you as a friend.

Re: DiecastAce Field Back in Biz...

Pappy, very nice. I've been in a new house for over a year and still no display cabinets, so I am envious.

I don't think the shelves are overcrowded. I can't really tell from the photos but I wonder if you might be able to take advantage of wall space with wall-mounted cabinets like these:

IKEA | Cabinets & sideboards | Display cabinets | LIATORP | Glass-door wall cabinet

IKEA | Cabinets & sideboards | Cabinets | GRIMLE | Glass-door wall cabinet

These are just examples, and style and color can vary, but it allows you to use limited space more efficiently

I like the way you think OC And those are some cabinets I hadn't seen so thanks, I'll ponder 'em.

I did have a wall mount DVD case from Ikea in the last house for 1:72 fighters that worked quite well... but I think the space where one would work here is where I will need to put the Detolf (which is needed for the large scale birds).

I have a free wall in the office I could use one or two of those on but it's where I walk by to access my desk and right now I plan to use it all for pictures/artwork I think.

I ended up leaving that DVD Case at the old house as I didn't want to tear the mounts out of the wall and patch it...... I do think a Grimle or two could work though..... hmmmmmmm....

Cool collection Pappy, I like the BofB stuff alot. And that Brewster is ridin' real tight with the Kate.

I notice your doorknob is missing... great way to keep folks in the diecast room!

Re: DiecastAce Field Back in Biz...

Pappy, I like the Detolf, with one caveat. The sides all have slight gaps from the frame so they have a greater exposure to dust. That is the main reason I have never purchased one. Otherwise, they are ideal because of shape, size and amount of glass.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to wall space: art or cabinets. I have a few framed prints and they tend to eat up the space.

Heck of a collection there Pappy. And I really like the way you have the B-17 next to the B-52. It really is amazing the size difference.
