Re: Extra armament for Century F-14s

I used to have a special issue of AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY about the air war in Vietnam, including carrier operations in the Tonkin Gulf. In one of the photos, an A-6 on deck is shown carrying a Sidewinder on one wing rack.

Interesting...I wonder if that was for "show" only? I didn't think the A-6 received air-to-air capability until the -F model was proposed? Off to research...

Re: Extra armament for Century F-14s

Hasegawa puts out an air to air missile weapon set that I do believe has Phoenix missiles (How many not sure). It would be their Weapons Set III.

Thanks for the info. Just placed and order for those. I have also placed an order for a Hasegawa F-14 kit that I found for cheap on ebay. Will try to modify the CW pylons in some way once I get it.

I have another question for you guys. Where can I find 1:72 aircraft carrier tow truck and fire trucks? I know Dragon includes one with their diorama but I would like to avoid paying for the crappy VFA-2 model that comes with it.

TUNDRA04:

No, I doubt it was for show. The photo was taken on the flight deck of a carrier in the Tonkin Gulf during flight operations. The A-6 with Sidewinder was shown behind another jet. The A-6 wing was folded, but the Sidewinder was very clear in the photo.

I bring this up because I wish Century Wings would vary the A-6 payload a little more---the CW F-14s come with Sidewinders, Sparrow, Phoenix, TARPS, LANTIRN, various smart bombs, drop tanks etc. It would be interesting to see Century wings vary their A-6 with Sidewinders, pods, smart bombs, etc.

FIREFIGHTERPILOT1:

My A-6 Last Flight has just CBUs, HARMS and drop tanks.
I just ordered an A-6 Moonlighters with just dumb bombs and drop tanks.

I wish CW had varied their A-6 payload as much as they did on their F-14s. I wish my A-6 had ECM pods, smart bombs like the F14, even a Sidewinder since the A-6 carried the missile in Vietnam.

Re: Extra armament for Century F-14s

yeah i'd like more choice for armament, the a-6 can carry:

2.75" (70 mm) Rocket Pod
5" (127 mm) Zuni Rocket Pod
Mk-20 Rockeye
Mk-77 Napalm
Mk-81
Mk-82 Snakeye
Mk-83
Mk-84
Mk-117
CBU-78 Gator
GBU-10E Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb
GBU-12D Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb
GBU-16B Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb
AGM-123A Skipper II
AGM-45 Shrike
AGM-62 Walleye
AIM-9 Sidewinder
AGM-84D Harpoon
AGM-88 HARM
AGM-84E SLAM
AGM-65 Maverick
AGM-123 Skipper
B-61 Nuclear Bomb

so its not like CW have a limited chioce on what they can supply with it

Re: Extra armament for Century F-14s

I wish my CW A-6 had the option of mounting 2 AGM-84 Harpoons on them---some of the CW F-14s certainly have a lot of payload options to choose from. Considering the CW A-6 is smaller than the CW F-14 and has about the same selling price, adding a few more payload options isn't asking for too much.
