Re: Choose The Next Release

Just for fun (please, no monetary comps involved here) ...anybody here wants to bet that the next jet mold will be an F-8 Crusader?

Re: Choose The Next Release

Possibly, but a big issue is that the only F-8's in The Final Countdown were RF-8's, which won't lead (directly) to an F-8A/B/C/D/E/FN/H/J/K/L mold. Now, if you do it right you can have the fuselage molded in two halves at the right spot, and use the same wing, gear, and rear fuselage. With the gear bay below and the wing bay above the join line, the seam wouldn't be obvious (especially as it's along a panel line anyways).

Here's hoping that CW is paying very close attention on this...

Re: Choose The Next Release

The Hasegawa 1/48 kit is clearly designed to do an RF-8 (or F-8/A/D/C/D/H/K/L), but due to the F-8 itself not selling as well as they'd like apparently, they've never finished up the RF-8 parts, or something along those lines. Plus despite being a model kit and having parts designed to do so, you really can't put the wing up without a lot of carving and sanding--the parts don't fit. (I think they have the inboard flap line and rear hinge lines angled off---just enough to screw things up when the wing is raised)

The only way that really works is two completely different wings, one molded for flaps up and wing down, and one molded for wing up and flaps down. (I mentioned this earlier, but due to the F-8 having minimal armament and no drop tanks etc---the "money saved" in weaponry could be used to give us a second wing---make "wing up and flaps down" the default one, and adding in a second, simple, "clean" wing would take the place of the weapons/tanks, price/materials wise) Again, the Hasegawa kit is designed to have the wing removable upon final assembly, but they only give you parts for one wing. (The real thing is only held on by a single hinge and one strut, a model can easily replicate that)

I rather would like to see an RF-8. But I canīt ged rid of the feeling that the majority here would rather like the "Gunfighter" version. So I hope the "money saved" in armament will be used for two different fuselage molds. It would not matter to me, if I could only display the plane "flaps up and wings down".

Re: Choose The Next Release

The "wing-up" option would be kind of neat, but I could live without it. It would be quite similar to CW's "launch" configged F-14s, in that the F-8 really didn't spend much time in that mode. Taking off and landing was pretty much it. As soon as the gear was retracted, so was the wing. And once it landed and rolled off the runway, back down it would come. I seldom (if ever) remember seeing one parked with the wing up. (museums and gate guards being the exception)

Now, what would be really cool if they did go that route, would be to have a positionable tailhook (not too difficult), with a display stand that positioned it in an ever so slightly nose-high, wings level attitude to simulate a carrier approach. But then they would also have to supply extra "extended" landing gear struts or it would look ridiculous....Now that would make an excellent display and would make the whole raised wing idea really worthwhile...

Re: Choose The Next Release

Plenty of pics of the wings up while on the ground---including with the wings folded while raised. That looks the best of all for a display IMHO, but pretty much precludes the use of putting it up on a display stand for "in flight". (Though it can happen)

Re: Choose The Next Release

Just got an email from Flying Tigers and the next aircraft is going to be the A-7 Corsair II. Not one mentioned in the poll but could be really nice, looking forward to it if it's to the same standard as Century Wings' releases so far!

Re: Choose The Next Release

The A-7 wasn't mentioned because we knew it was coming. I guess we're technically talking about the "next next" release.
