Movie birds

I was just wondering what most of you guys think about collecting diecast airplanes of aircraft that were used in movies. Such as an A-6 from Flight of the Intruder, an F-14 from Top Gun, and so on.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Movie birds

You move fast, MD. You post the thought of having this poll...next thing I know, there it is! I voted no, by the way. I would never say never, but I prefer my birds to be of the real thing. That's why I've avoided the "Flyboys" aircraft. But, as I said, I won't say never. Perhaps something mightcome along that I can't resist!

Re: Movie birds

You'll frankly never see TopGun planes nowadays----Paramount is viciously protective of the trademark (even though they are technically public domain real USN insignia) and charges tens of thousands of dollars for even a very small license. (Some guys tried to make decals recently, and contacted Paramount to see what would be required).

IMHO, most "movie planes" are pointless---fake insignia, inaccurate paint schemes, filmed using radio control models or CG instead of the real thing, etc. The Final Countdown is an exception, since those are real planes with real markings from real squadrons! All the equipment is real, only the story is fake. I can't think of any "fake" plane I'd prefer over a model of a real one. Just IMHO.

Re: Movie birds

not a bad idea MD, I'd go for a box set of the types from the Battle of Britain movie....

or maybe a dusty, weathered Corsair from Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Re: Movie birds

Even though I said it on the other thread, I'll make it official here...I definitely voted 'NO' on ficticious 'Hollywood Birds'.....It would have to be offered to me at next to nothing in cost in order for me to accept it....but then again I never read fictional books either..Too much interesting real stuff out there!

Re: Movie birds

Keep in mind that the A-6's used in Flight of the Intruder were real, and the real Devil 505 is being restored at the Yankee Air Museum in Yipsilanti, MI. It still has the movie markings visible on it.

Didn't the Tomcat from Top Gun have F-18 Markings on the tail?

Re: Movie birds

Ice Man's F-14 was actually from VF-111, and had VF-111 markings on the ventral fin. But it wore VFA-25's Fist of the Fleet insignia on the tail---which had "VF-213" prominently displayed right below the fist.

Maverick's F-14 was from VF-51, and wore markings from VAW-110. Though he had VF-1 patches on his jacket.

Re: Movie birds

Sorry MD, but it's a "NO" vote for me! I'll echo the sentiments of our friend, Skunky, here. To be fair, I'd rather see the actual squadron units seen in "The Final Countdown" movie. At least those were NOT fictitious!
