Re: Movie birds

I could go for a Dr. Strangelove B-52- as long as it included H-bombs and the Slim Pickens action figure!!!

Makes me wanna see that movie again.

Re: Movie birds

You'll frankly never see TopGun planes nowadays----Paramount is viciously protective of the trademark (even though they are technically public domain real USN insignia) and charges tens of thousands of dollars for even a very small license. (Some guys tried to make decals recently, and contacted Paramount to see what would be required).

IMHO, most "movie planes" are pointless---fake insignia, inaccurate paint schemes, filmed using radio control models or CG instead of the real thing, etc. The Final Countdown is an exception, since those are real planes with real markings from real squadrons! All the equipment is real, only the story is fake. I can't think of any "fake" plane I'd prefer over a model of a real one. Just IMHO.

You can still find the models which were released in support of the movie Top Gun on Ebay if you want the decals. I have a copy of the Top Gun F-14 decal sheet in storage.

I know people who make decals for Macross mecha, as long as the decals were not sold for profit they could find their way to collectors who really want them.

Re: Movie birds

Real movie birds = OK (e.g. "Final Countdown")

Fictitious movie birds = No (e.g. "Flyboys")

Re: Movie birds

I voted no since the manufacturers haven't even made a fraction of real life liveries that we've all been asking for (over and over again). IMHO, I think alot of forum members would be disappointed and/or upset if a manufacturer were to "waste" production efforts on a fake movie livery instead of a popular real-life bird.

To prove my point you just have to go back and read any of the F-14 threads. I mean every time CW releases a new F-14, everyone on this forum jumps in with a "I hope CW makes a subdued VF-......" or "I'd really like VF-..... from 19xx".

Another reason I voted "no" was because most Hollywood aviation movies are crap, so I wouldn't want to own the fake livery of a cruddy movie as opposed to a real plane with history behind it!

Besides, who'd want a Steven Segal piloted F/T-117 (Fighter/Transport) with special Boeing 747 docking tube ?

Re: Movie birds

Well while I do have a problem with the idea of selling aircraft with fictional markings, I have no quarell with owning fictionalized aircraft!. I would love to own a reproduction of the X-Men's blackbird or an A-wing from Star Wars! Those would be hella cool!

Re: Movie birds

I would love to get a sharp looking X-plane myself. Desktop make a wooden one that can be bought for $29 at theairplaneshop, but its really not worth even that price, marked down from over $ 200. The problem with such planes is the licensing fees which are so high and then the fact that the manufacturer cannot use it for anything else. It is such a specialized market it is hard for any quality manufacturer to take the project on.

Re: Movie birds

Prefer to keep movie birds on the big screen and the real ones on the shelf.
