Re: Gear Down F-14's

Ever put a Dragon Tomcat together?

Seriously, though your question was probably rhetorical, they are "great" for their accuracy first I believe -- I'm not too keen on the panel lines and the heavy ink/wash they get myself. But they do cut a mean profile in the cabinet.

Yeah the Dragon was a bit more fiddly to put together and get to stay together. Still don't display mine on its gear because gear really does not do the job. Much prefer CW much nicer model.

Re: Gear Down F-14's

Well that was interesting, hellva lot of scraping I did not want to do but the Jolly Rogers, Sundowners and Grimreapers have now joined the Red Rippers (Dragon) in my display cabinet.
..........Only cut myself once.
So tell me again, why are Century Tomcats so great?

On my AJ203 i had the same problem with the gears boxes rocking back and fourth i trimmed the outside gear area and it fit nice and flush no more rocking back and fourth. Then i painted it with a light coat flat white with my airbrush so you could not see the area i trimmed off.
My AJ200 was a flush fit almost a little too tight had to wiggle it around to get the gear box out..But the Sundowners is perfect not too loose and not too tight..
Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you.

Re: Gear Down F-14's

Ditto, same issue here. I dealt with it in two ways. For the model I might want to switch out the gear for flight mode, I popped in a small ball of tissue on the narrower area. It balances it out so the gear stay flat when sitting on the shelf for display wheels down.
For the one that I am looking at keeping in, I am using Elmers gel glue. Its a blue rubber glue which peels right off if you do decide to take the gear out, but sticks well enough to secure the gear. I also use it for the missile pods that seem to want to fall out every once in awhile.

Re: Gear Down F-14's

Seems a common problem. I did scrape lots of paint of gear "boxes" and got them to fit quite well. Had 4 Tomcats and only Sundowners slipped in as it was supposed to. All others needed varying degrees of scraping.
