Re: Kill marking?

I thought the F-14 only claimed an Mil-17 and a cargo plane during that conflict?

So far this is all i have found for this bird...
160656 F-14A VF-111 NL200 crashed 31.03.1985 after suffering a hydraulic failure while returning to USS Carl Vinson from a night mission. The crew attempted to divert to a shore base but control difficulties eventually necessitated crew ejection.

Re: Kill marking?

That would be a "zap" against an adversary F-15. Said F-15 probably has an F-14 kill marking from the next afternoon's exercises. Rival aircraft types love to put mock kill markings acquired during war games, training, etc. There's probably a Super Hornet out there with an F-22 zap painted on it, from the infamous HUD footage.

Also--almost every word of that article linked to is wrong. VF-111 wasn't in Desert Storm AT ALL. They were ashore in the US having just got back from a West Pac cruise. They wouldn't deploy again until DS was over. Also, Miss Molly wore those markings on BOTH sides, not just starboard. And it didn't have white undersides. And it wasn't lost in a mid-air collision, it went to VF-154 and was their CAG for years. And VF-111 didn't do "half the squadron in dark ghost grey" at any time, especially not during their non-existent Desert Storm tour.

Re: Kill marking?

Bandit,
This is really the best site to look for any info on the F-14's.

Re: Kill marking?

I actually prefer http://www.topedge.com/alley/alley.htm It hasn't been updated in years, but I've still learned more from there than any other source. ESPECIALLY in the "how are early A's, late A's, B's, and D's all TRULY physically different" category.

Is there anywhere to view the footage of the HUD?
They should put a huge Raptor kill marking on their Vertical Stablizers and buzz the raptor's airfield

Re: Kill marking?

No, there's just 2 stills, and the USAF seemed quite ticked that ANY pics got out, as the Super Hornet's G's, alpha, and airspeed at which the "kill" occurred are visible, and people think that may point out a F-22's "weak spot" in the flight envelope---or the USAF just doesn't want the F-22 to be thought of as anything but utterly invincible. (Plus, scenarios like these are rarely true "all-out dogfights" and one group or another is usually intentionally hampered in some way to teach a specific tactic or situation)

All that said, here you go.
