Starman, that is just about the coolest diorama I ever saw! You better open up the wings though or the Tomcat is gonna overshoot the Zero way before there is any time to launch a missile!

Pilot could have over-ridden the wing command, and has them swept back "just because". If they have to, Tomcats can even land with the wings back. (Had to, as part of carrier trials)

When they first engage them for real, there's a good shot showing them sweeping the wings back. Presumably they swing throughout the fight---and the pilots can always override and command the wings to do the exact opposite of what you'd expect.
