Re: Pics: Grim Reaper "Bombcat"

I have that book too, which is what I thought you were referencing. They used Mk82's, not 84's. (The JDAM's though are the worst to keep the designations straight, they're the exact opposite of what you'd expect)

Re: Pics: Grim Reaper "Bombcat"

Hey Pappy,

Is that a clear plastic piece attached to the front of the infrared sensor, or just painted?

It's boxed up for the move so I can't check and I honestly don't remember... anyone else want to chime in for Elmer?

Re: Pics: Grim Reaper "Bombcat"

Actually, that bird being a show bird and all, i thought it never had any load outs

It's not that it's a show bird, VF-101 was a FRS squadron (Fleet Replacement Squadron) and they basically trained new F-14 pilots how to fly the plane. This is after flight school, where you actually build time flying your specific aircraft. That being said, RAG jets are non-deployed aircraft, never used for combat. They are 100% as capable as fleet jets, but they would only be used in dire circumstances. Because of that, they RARELY ever carry live ordinance, especially in that configuration. If anything they would carry the various blue colored training ordinance (like the AIM-9's found on Dragon Warbirds F-14's.)

Because of this fact, as hard as it is to fight the urge, I have left my Grim reaper bird completely stripped of Ordinance, even the Phoenix missile rails. I put on the fuel tanks on but that's probably as far as I'll go. I own 6 other CW Tomcats that I have armed to the teeth so it's easier to leave one clean

Sometimes, leaving an aircraft 'clean' with no ordnance enhances its aesthetic appeal, enabling you to appreciate the design more than you would otherwise have done .
