Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

also think century section should be added if only to avoid confusion with the two companies.

AJ202 NEW!
Grumman F-14A Tomcat
586437 VF-84 The Fighting 84 JollyRogers, Carrier Air Wing 8, USS Nimitz CVN-68 1978
A 1/72nd Scale Diecast model from Century Wings
Note: The AJ202 has fixed wings with flaps and leading edge slats extended.

Since its first deployment in 1975, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat has provided protection against airborne attack for the Navy's greatest asset, the aircraft carrier. Developed during the height of the cold war, this long-range interceptor was intended to defend the fleet against cruise missile-armed Soviet bombers long before they could become a threat.

Two factors which have made the F-14 such a capable interceptor have been it's AN/AWG-9 radar and it's AIM-54 Phoenix missile. The Tomcat is the only aircraft in the world that can carry this weapon, able to bring down an oncoming target at ranges exceeding 100 miles. The F-14's radar can guide six of these missiles to individual targets while tracking an a total of 24 aircraft.

Since the end of the cold war, there has been no threat to the carrier fleet from long-range bombers. This, combined with reductions in defense spending has forced the F-14 to adapt to the changing world climate. From the outset, the F-14 was designed with a secondary ground-attack role. Due to the importance of fleet defense however, this capability was never utilized by the Navy. In an effort to fill its decks with more cost-effective multi-role aircraft, this secondary role is now being employed. VF-103 (The Jolly Rogers) was the first squadron to make use of a new tool in the F-14's inventory. The Lockheed-Martin LANTIRN (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infra-Red for Night) system will give the F-14 a precision strike capability on par with that of the Air Force's F-15E. While continuing to be tasked with fleet defense duties, the Tomcat now provides the Navy with a strike aircraft of considerable range.

Sadly, the sun is setting on this aircraft. Soon after the turn of the century, the F-14s along with their Phoenix missiles will gradually disappear from the carrier decks, replaced by the F/A-18E/F. It's not likely to be forgotten, joining the ranks of other aircraft which refuse to fade from memory such as the F-4 Phantom II and the P-51 Mustang.

Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

I picked one of these up today and words cannot adequately describe what a superb model this is. The dealer where I got mine said Century is already sold out so my advice is: don't delay.

Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

Very nice Mark!

Now decisions, decisions -- which to pick up? The launch config, which looks great, but doesn't have much display flexibility, or the version with the adjustable wings? Opinions from those with both???

Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

I love my launch version, mostly because it is unique. I've been waiting for a diecast with flaps and slats. It still retains the same weapons loadout flexibility as the other version.

Now if I could figure out a way to extend the landing gears struts, I could have one in landing configuration....

Re: Century Wings: Wings of Heros Pics

It's my understanding that the AJ202 (leading edge slats and flaps extended) is in shorter supply than AJ200. I don't know if this aids you in making a decision or not, but I thought you might want to know.
