Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

French one would be my favourite, I think some of these fought on both sides during the war.

I was getting worried about you FVD, glad to see you back and posting.

A French one....Well then i guess we'll have to wait another time for one like this.

Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

A little fact checking on 6121:

This model depicts Curtiss P-36A, Serial No. 38-086 of the 46th Pursuit Squadron, December 7, 1941. The following is taken from a fact sheet on-line at the USAF's Museum:
Fact Sheets : Lt. Phillip Rasmussen and His P-36A : Lt. Phillip Rasmussen and His P-36A

"Opposition to the Japanese attack was scattered and disorganized. Army personnel shot at Japanese aircraft with everything from antiaircraft guns to pistols. One of the few pilots who managed to engage enemy aircraft was 2Lt. Philip M. Rasmussen of the 46th Pursuit Squadron. He had just arisen when the attack began. Still wearing his pajamas, Lt. Rasmussen sped toward the flight line.

At the flight line, all of the aircraft were destroyed or burning except for a few P-36 Hawks. Lt. Rasmussen jumped in one and taxied to a revetment at the edge of the airfield, where he joined three other pilots also preparing undamaged P-36 fighters. The pilots took off under fire, and were directed by radio toward Kaneohe Bay where they engaged 11 Japanese fighters in battle.

After shooting down one Japanese aircraft, Lt. Rasmussen was attacked by two Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighters. Gunfire and 20mm cannon shells shattered the canopy, destroyed the radio and severed the P-36's hydraulic lines and rudder cable. Lt. Rasmussen sought refuge in nearby cloud cover and began flying back toward Wheeler Field. He landed the P-36 without brakes, rudder or tailwheel, and with more than 500 bullet holes.

For his actions, Lt. Rasmussen received the Silver Star. He survived the war, shooting down a second Japanese aircraft in 1943. He retired from the Air Force in 1965."

The USAF Museum has 38-001 on display, painted as 38-086.

Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

Here is a paint scheme that is a little bit different.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

A little fact checking on 6122:

From the pictures, this appears to be a Curtiss P-36C. The markings are in the 27th Pursuit Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group at the Cleveland Air Races August/September 1939. The 27th was probably based at Selfridge Field, MI during this time.

Only 30 P-36C aircraft were delivered to USAAC, with serials 38-181 to 38-210. I haven't been able to dig up anything yet on Willis Taylor (will keep digging), but I found a picture of aircraft number 69 at the Cleveland Air Races which indicated it was the squadron leader's aircraft. However, the fuselage bands are different from C1's example, so I am not certain it is the aircraft C1 modeled. If anyone finds more information about this particular aircraft or Willis Taylor, please post.

This is also a P-36C which appears to be in the markings of the 27th Pursuit Squadron. Perhaps this is also painted up for the 1939 Cleveland Air Races.

Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

A little fact checking on 6123:

This model depicts Curtiss P-36A (cannot yet locate the serial) of the 18th Pursuit Group, Wheeler Field, Hawaii, 1940. The aircraft was dubbed "Gold Bug" Flown by group commander Major Ken Walker. This site gives a nice 3D view of what C1's model may look like:

Special Hobby 1/32 P-36 by Tom Cleaver

Ken Walker was killed in a B-17 in January 1943 with grade of Brig General. If anyone digs up more info on Ken Walker or the history of this particular aircraft (including serial) please post.

EDIT: I found this site which gives a nice history of Brigadier General Kenneth Walker:

Brigadier General Kenneth Newton Walker, USAAC

Neat thing about the P-36s that sported these paint schemes for the Cleveland Air Races. No two P-36s where painted alike.

Re: C1 P-36 in 2008!

Well, I gotta admit, when I first saw the news of this release, I wasn't as thrilled as the rest of you.
But, after reading all the posts and seeing some pictures, I am starting to warm up to this model.
Not my first choice, but I've already pre-ordered the Pearl Harbor version. Wasn't there a mention
earlier about maybe 2 models being released by C1 this year? I still have my hopes for a 1:48 P-39
from C1.
