Re: Pics: C1 Wubke Dora

One gripe, which I am fixing right now,are the cannon barrels; the inboard 20mms were hopelessly warped, and the outboard 30mm looked like what my Samoyed "Bobby" drops in the back yard ! I pulled 'em all out,(easy) and refitted with brass tubing,.032 for the 20's and .047 for the 30's . It was so easy that I grabbed my Barkhorn Dora 9 and did the same mod.I was getting tired of straightening them every time I picked it up.

Terrific idea, rw! Did you yank 'em with pliers? Does the tubing fit in the recesses snugly? Can you post pics?

Elmer,I can't do pics, don't have the gear for it. However....the plasti-rubber gun barrels will pull out easily, fingers or I did use pliers to grab the 30mm barrels.I used the old barrels to measure for the brass, which is thin wall that you can cut by rolling it between a razor blade and a hard surface. The brass did not fit snugly.I used a bit of cheap super -glue gel from the drug store, just a tiny dab on the end of the brass. It dries slow so you have time to align them.I painted them with Testors Model-Master Gun -metal enamel. There is no noticable gap when done, and the loose fit actually helps prevent a catastrophe like if the super glue was forced out by a tight fit!! The brass I used was .032 and .047 thin wall (.006) that came from a forgotten source (maybe Special Shapes?) I'd Google around if your LHS doesn't have any... You will be amazed at how good they look when you're done!

Thanks, rw. I think I will try it with the D-9. If I like the results I may proceed to the other two. What about the pitot tubes... did you replace these also? Mine are more wonky than the guns.

Elmer don't do it!!! Get Franz Gotz's yellow 10 Fw190D13!!! I debated long and hard on these 2 and chose the Gotz because the paint scheme is sharper (IMHO), the actual aircraft is still in existance, and the model is stunningly accurate to the real thing.

I agree! I have Gotz's plane too.

I think Elmer has all 3 of the C1 FW-190D. He's just going to try out roo's mod on the D9 before proceeding with the the D11 and D13 (depending on the results).

Personally I have the D11 and D13. I like the D13 better but I'm also contemplating on getting the D9 to complete the trifecta (FVD's word).

I think your right. I feel a bit sheepish.

Re: Pics: C1 Wubke Dora

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this thread is way off base. From the very start everything was wrong and now, now that all of you have jumped on the bandwagon, I have to end it.

This is not Wubke's Dora, it's Karl-Heinz Hofmann's! Now, you can slather on the drool...

In February 1945, Goring authorized Galland to form a Jagdverband (Special Fighter Squadron) of experienced pilots to fly the Me 262. Retraining took time, and they did not become operational until 5 April, 1945. Galland recruited Leutnant Heinz Sachsenberg (104 victories) from Jagd Geschwader (Hunting Wing0 26, to lead a Platzschutzstaffel (Airfield Defense Flight). Four Fw190D’s were acquired: three D-9’s and one D-11. They painted these airplanes red underneath with white stripes on the undersides of the wings, horizontal tail planes and forward fuselage to prevent German flak from confusing their ‘Doras’ with American Mustangs. When jets took off and landed, the 190D’s were to circle the vicinity of the Munich-Reim airfield at an altitude of 500 meters and never to pursue Allied fighters. They used the radio call signal Pagagei (Parrot), but this was not a name for their unit. Sachsenberg flew “Red 1”, Hptm. Waldemar Wubke flew “Red 3” and Oblt. Klaus Faber flew “Red 13” , (all D-9s). Lt. Karl-Heinz Hofmann flew “Red 4’ a D-11. Previously this Dora-11 aircraft was thought a prototype, but the latest information confirms that it was a production aircraft with standard two-tone green camouflage. Hofmann was one of the few members of JV 44 Doras bore slogans, and Hofmann’s was “ Der Nachste Herr deiselbe Dame!” ( The next Guy same Dame!) His rare Dora-11 had 30mm cannons mounted outboard of the landing gear instead of the cannons in the wing roots). Although the D-11 had much greater firepower, outboard cannons were prone to jam, and many pilots preferred the D-9’s concentrated firing pattern.

Don't forget the targets are my airfields, Leigh-Mallory, and you're not getting fifty, you're not even getting ten.
